25. A steel rod 5m long and 30mm in diameter is subjected to an axial tensile load of 50kN.
Determine the change in length, diameter and volume of the rod. Take E=
2x105MPa and Poisson’s ratio = 0.25
26. A steel rod of 3cm diameter is enclosed centrally in a hollow copper tube of external diameter
5cm and internal diameter 4cm. The composite bar is subjected to an axial pull of 4500N. If
the length of each bar is 15cm, Determine a) the Stresses in the rod and tube and b) the Load
carried by each bar
27. A reinforced concrete column is 300mm x 300mm in cross-section. The column is
provided with 8 bars of 20mm diameter. The column carries a load of 360kN. Determine
the stress in concrete and steel if, ES= 2.1x105 N/mm2 and EC= 0.14x105 N/mm2.
28. A rod is 2 m long at a temperature of 10°C. Determine the expansion of the rod
when the temperature is raised to 80°C. If this expansion is prevented, find the
stress induced in the material of the rod.
Take E=1.0×105MPa and α = 12×10-6/°C
