This has largely influenced the urban form of its existing fabric. The changed that has happened in the urban fabric of the cities were majorly due to social and economic forces during this period. Allahabad was one of the important cities during this time of colonial rule. Therefore, the city of Allahabad is taken as a case example to understand the impact of colonial rule on the existing fabric of the old city, Hypothesis : Several urban elements bind together forms the urban fabric ( Ravari & Mazloomi, 2015) In this study, the hypothesis is if there is a connection between an urban element which in the case of the city of Allahabad, a clock tower and the propagation of a certain political ideology or agenda within the old urban fabric of the city. Research argument : | am studying the morphological charachteristics of an urban element (clocktower) in the city of Allahabad and the socio economic forces behind its creation to find out if political ideologies or agendas were propagated through the use of clocktowers. Aim : | am studying the morphological characteristics of an urban element (clocktower) in the city of Allahabad and the socio economic forces behind its creation to find out if political ideologies or agendas were propagated through the use of clocktowers to establish a link between morphology and political propaganda, Objectives 1. to study the form of the clock tower and its architectural characteristics. 2. to study the socio-economic scenario and political history of the city of allahabad during the time of the creation of the clocktower Justification : This purpose of this study is to establish a link between a major imeagable element of the city of Allahabad which is the clocktower and the ideology of swadeshi movement. This will further help us to understand if this link between an urban element and political ideology exists in all cities during the time of British rule over India Scope: The scope of this study is to determine what kind of an architectural expression does the clocktower has and the social institutions or systems that people formed in the city of Allahabad. Limitation : The study does not cover certain aspects like the character of the street where the clock tower sits or the social hierarchy at that time, because of lack of recorded literature on these topics. Structure of research : The structuring of this research will be based on the political historic significance and the events that occurred in the city of Allahabad at first. Secondly, it will dwell in the global movements and events which will lead to how the idea of the clocktower came into existence and lastly, the study will specifically focus on the form and character of the clocktower itself and space where it sits. Chapterisation 1. The city and its story 1. a. Prayaga 1. b. Akbar's Ilahabas Lc. British Allahabad 2. Global movements and the advent of world's fair 3. United Province exhibition 4. Clock tower and the power of space Methodology : Literature review of several books, research papers, newspapers and gazeteers are needed in order to find out the socio political history of the city of Allahabad and global movements. Raw data from the site is needed to document the architectural expression and form of the clocktower and its spatial qualities. Tentative conclusion : Urban form has a great impact on the everydayness of people's life and vice versa. On the other hand, using an urban element to propagate certain ideologies to create a political statement is a very significant issue in the political history of major cities all across the world. Hence to conclude this study, we can say that clock towers, being an urban element and acting as a civic art not only communicates the idea of exploitation of the ruling class but also a tool to propagate a political agenda, in our case, it was the swadeshi movement. Therefore it is understandable that this can be a pattern in all the cities in India which has a clocktower designed in hybrid or amalgamation of indian and european style of architecture, which were specifically used to send a strong political message to the britishers.
