TEFL/Linguistics (Iraq)

I am writing to apply for the Fulbright JFDP for Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for
Iraq.

I am a lecturer at the Department of English, Mustansiryah University. I am seeking an

opportunity to use my academic skills and professional experience, as a manger of the
Continuing Education Center at my home university, in one of the finest exchange
programs available to Iraqi academics. I look forward to participate in the Fulbright
Visiting Scholar Program in order to develop my English teaching skills and familiarize
myself with the American culture and academic life in the USA.
Such a unique opportunity will be very beneficial to me, to the students in my
department and to my colleagues at the Continuing Education Center. The added value
of my participation in this program is that I can make use of the knowledge and the
skills acquired during the program in my position as an instructor of applied linguistics
at my home department. More importantly, however, my participation will have more
sustainable and long term impact on the teachers and administrators served by the
Continuing Education Center that I manage at my home university.

The benefit of Fulbright Program for my students, colleagues, and administrators at

my university.

I genuinely enjoy and feel motivated to learn more about the field of TEFL, which I am
pursuing as a career. This experience would teach me a range of skills pertinent to my
future, as well as give me the opportunity to make connections in the field. Moreover,
my participation in this program provides a great opportunity for me to develop my
academic skills in my field as an academic and manger of the Continuing Education
Center at my host university through establishing professional contacts with the
American academics. Therefore, this program can develop my capacity in the modern
teaching methods, the use of technology in the classroom as well as curriculum design
used in higher education settings in the United States which will consequently help me
achieve my professional goals concerning my students at the Department of English
and at the Continuing Education Center.
Additionally, as a manger of the Continuing Education Center, I can transfer
the skills and expertise I acquire in this program to my other colleagues and to
administrators at my university by holding courses and workshops in the Continuing
Education Center.

The faculty development or academic capacity building I would like to concentrate on

during the grant.

My plan is to focus on three important aspects during the program; these are
the use of technology in the classroom, the new methods/research tools in my field,
and language testing and assessment.

The use of technology in the classroom makes the students more engaged
with the materials they are studying. Most students nowadays are using mobile
technology to play and learn. So, it is very important to make the classrooms fit the way
the students want and are used to learning. Besides, using mobile technology can
expose the students to the most up-to-date information in a fashion that is easier and
faster than before.

I would also like to concentrate on the new methods/research tools in my

field. Methods of teaching English have developed rapidly. So, it’s imperative for
modern language teachers to understand the various methods and techniques so that
they are able to address the needs of today’s students as well as to boost the
enjoyment of learning a language.

The third aspect I would also like to concentrate on is language testing and
assessment. It is one of the most important aspects of any responsibilities as a faculty
member and as a manager of the Continuing Education center. Through appropriate
assessment, teachers can classify and grade their students, give feedback and structure
their teaching accordingly. It can provide both teachers and students with information
about the level of knowledge, skills, difficulties in foreign language learning, and which
activities are the most useful.

My plan to implement what I learn through participation in the program upon my

return home.

To be an effective educator, I must share with others what I have learned about
teaching. I plan to transfer the knowledge, skills and experience I gain during my
participation in the program to my academic colleagues in the department through
organizing a series of workshops that can introduce them to the academic life in the
United States. This can extensively improve the quality of the education provided by
my department to our students.-
Teachers as active members in their culture and, as such, can influence the
students with their actions. Due to different political and social factors, up until
recently young Iraqi men and women have not had the chance to play an active role
in the development of their country. Through my participation in the program, I aim
to empower my students at the department and my beneficiaries at the Continuing
Education Center in ways to help them assume their active role in the society.

and assessments techniques and tools learned during my participation in the

program in the proficiency test run by the Continuing Education center which I
manage.

The specializations or research interests within my broader academic field that I

would like to explore through collaboration with U.S. faculty during my grant.

I hope that I will have the chance to be introduced to the latest trends in language
teaching and assessment at the higher education level in the United States. I am very
interested in the communicative teaching approach, and the combination of
methodologies and implementing different classroom practices to specifically adjust
to the students’ needs. Exchanging experiences and starting collaboration with
American researchers, academics and other participants will certainly add a lot to my
capacity as a language teacher, educator, and academic.

I would like to visit the Continuing Education Center (or its equivalence) at my host
institution in order to enhance experience sharing and to develop a mutual
collaboration.

Things that I aspire to learn about American society and culture, and the aspects of
my own culture, history, and background that I wish to share with American
faculty and others in the community.

Beyond academic linguistics and learning teaching experience, I believe there is

inherent value in experiencing the culture of my area of study as well. To teach
English to people who speak Arabic as their primary language, I believe that
understanding more than just the language is paramount. I believe that
understanding the culture that underlies the language is as important, if not more,
than understanding the associated words. While I can and do study this routinely,
the best way to understand it on a deeper level is by full immersion. Coming over to
the United States and your institution would allow me to immerse myself in the
American culture and aid my understanding of English linguistics. It will not only
enrich my knowledge, but will help me better teach my students and further their
growth.

I am very interested in the multicultural characteristic of the American society both

on and off campus. I would like to explore how cultural diffrences are managed in
academic life in the United States, and how these cultural differences are employed
to empower the students’ learning experience.

Moreover, I would also like to be a cultural ambassador for my country through

introducing the Americans on and off campus to the culture, history and aspects of
everyday life in Iraq. I think the long history, ancient civilizations and diverse heritage
