The metaphor of a cat is first most apparent when analyzing these lines.
Notice how Eliot uses phrases such as “rubs its back,” “rubs its muzzle,”
“sudden leap,” “curled once about the house,” and others to clearly point to the
metaphor. With this established, it is important to look into the reasoning behind
the cat imagery. By nature, cats are not very sociable creatures. In contrast to
dogs, who are commonly referred to as “man’s best friend,” cats most often keep
to themselves. Now the meaning of the metaphor is clear: Eliot essentially
compares Prufrock to the cat in this stanza. It fits his characterization well;
Prufrock has a very hard time socializing with others .
The crab metaphor in “The Love Song” uses similar techniques, but
illustrates a different side of Prufrock: his egotism. Prufrock narrates, “I should
have been a pair of ragged claws / Scuttling across the floors of silent seas”.
Most apparent in these lines is Prufrock’s desire for insignificance. The use of
the crab creates images of futility of moving slowly and with great difficulty.
This image also associated with process of aging and approaching death.
Q2\Speak about the symbolic vision of the Sphinx in the “second coming” ?
We describe people who look for physical pleasures as animals. They are
Outwardly human beings, but inwardly they act like animals. So, if There are
monsters, the second comer would be a monster like them. If they are good , they
should expect the coming of a prophets or saints. Therefore , the sphinx is a major
symbol in the poem , the most Important Symbol and it stands for modern man.
The look human being from Outside , but they act like animals. Therefore ,
something will come to Them like them. Therefore, the poet choose the sphinx.
The poet does not Say the new comer will be a sphinx, but the sphinx comes to
him during His dreams. The dream says something negative to him. So , the
meaning Of the second coming according to him depends on the meaning of this
vision. The meaning of this bad dream.
The old man is more experience. He has a big mind .If they are physically
Stronger than him. He can defeat them by being mentally, and spiritually
Stronger than them. But this is not an easy choice, because it needs hard Work ,
patience and knowledge. If someone needs to be physically strong This is easy ,
he has to ta[ke about his eating or do some fitness works. But if he wants to be
physically and spiritually strong this is not easy Think because it needs too much
years. So, he would be disrespected and All the time neglected unless he do
something:
Q4\ the contrast between the world of listeners and the Traveler in “ The
Listeners” ?
The listeners is just like Prufrock standing in the middle of the stairs. They
neither atheists nor good believers, but they are sinners, they believe in God, but
they are not good believers. So they are in the middle. They neither go up nor
get down because this is their religious position. If they are good believers, they
would have been upstairs. Everything without religion would be empty. Life
would be empty. People would be empty from inside.
Q5\ How does the victim speak about his past life before the war in “Strange
meeting” ?
The speaker felt he had mastery and a sense of control during war. The war
was a time when he excelled. Now he feels the reality of war. He sees how war
changes the world. Civilization runs away from war and changes. Soldiers feel
left behind.
You correctly point out the sense of regret that permeates this passage, but it
is, as elsewhere, tempered by recognition of a harsh inevitability. Owen again
stresses the many qualities that animated men who were being turned into killing
machines. The idea seems to be that an extension of the same courage and
wisdom might have saved the terrible ruin of society. "Vain citadels" could also
be read as a reference to the different nations involved.
