Working Abroad - Adan’s Experience in England

Retrieved and adapted from:
bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/teachingenglish/workingabroad/te_wa_reading_4.pdf

Hello! My name's Adan and I'm from Peru. I moved to England about six months ago. I am
living here because I am a musician. I love rock music and I even play in a band! We give
concerts all over the country. I also teach at a high school here in London because I need the
money to live in the city and to buy the expensive equipment for my band. I usually spend
the money I make from my job on things for my band. So I need to work a lot to pay for
everything.
There are four people in the band at the moment. My friend Carlos is on the guitar and I am
the drummer. Carlos is also from Peru but we became friends here in England. The singer,
Henry, is from France and our bassist is Florence from Brazil. We have a lot of fun when
we’re together! My friend Carlos and I sometimes speak in Spanish together, but if we're
with Henry and Florence then we speak in English because it's difficult for us to
communicate in French or Portuguese. The band practices on Mondays and Wednesdays and
we usually play a show on Fridays.

Living in London can be a little difficult because I don’t always understand British culture
and it’s a very busy city. Sometimes, I’m nervous in the city because I feel like some areas
are dangerous, but the city is very exciting. London is a wonderful place to live! Now, I’m
starting to enjoy living here because I understand what English people eat, what they're
talking about, and I know where my favorite stores and restaurants are.

One of my favorite things to do here is to take The London Underground, the public
transportation system that everyone calls “the Tube”. On “the Tube”, I can go anywhere in
the city. Often I like to travel without a destination, just to explore the city and discover new
places. My new favorite place is a coffee shop in Notting Hill called the Camden Coffee
House. Notting Hill is a small neighborhood in London that is popular for its many stores
and restaurants.

Working and living in a foreign country isn’t always easy, but I really enjoy it!
