Abstract

ABSTRACT
Simulation studies help us to know the “what if” situation of an existing process in an
industry. This study was conducted at PSG Industrial Institute’s Rotating Machinery Division
which manufactures monoblock and submersible pumps. The assembly of pumps was done
based on orders received. This made to provide a lead time in delivery of products to the
customers. Thus, the customers could not get the motors on time and on the other hand, it
forced the employees in the industry to work overtime to finish the orders received. To solve
this issue and to improve the productivity of the firm, this study was taken up. The study started
with initial process and product understanding of monoblock pumps by chalking out assembly
chart, flow process chart, outline process chart. This was followed by data collection which
includes time observations and time study to arrive at distribution and processing pattern and
then model building in Arena. Then, the input data were fed into each module and the
simulation was run to find out the bottlenecks. These bottlenecks were reduced by providing
suitable improvement solutions to increase the productivity.
