Qualitative benefits provided by Proficy
Historian HD
• Increased Productivity - reduce decision times and minimize effort spent managing
data. Finding cross-fleet patterns and creating/testing rules is very inefficient
(weeks to months) and can be reduced to minutes or hours.
• Higher Quality Analytics - data-driven decisions are correct and optimal. Larger
data sets can be used for creating rules, thus reducing rule errors on unseen
issues.
• Increased Customer Satisfaction - the customer sees our greater speed and
consistency.
• Elevated Team Effectiveness - digitized knowledge reduces training needs and
increases staff flexibility. Experienced engineers with valuable knowledge can be
more productive, and new engineers with less historical knowledge can also be
more effective.
• Enabled Growth - digitized knowledge allows for the creation of new digital
products and services

Examples of fleet & operational analysis
on Proficy Historian HD time series data
Fleet Analyses
• By reducing the time to analyze fleet level data sets from weeks to hours and
hours to minutes, Proficy Historian HD enable the following use cases:
– Calculate historical summary metrics for the entire fleet for all time
– Execute diagnostics rules on the entire fleet for all time
– Calculate historical baselines for the entire fleet
Operational Analyses
• Enterprise Historian will also enable the following engineering analysis use cases:
– Perform data analyses in support of RCAs (root cause analyses)
– Perform historical market analyses
– Perform ad-hoc data mining investigations
– Look for common historical patterns

Significantly reduced data footprint for Proficy
Historian HD vs plain text in Hadoop
Further testing was performed to evaluate the benefits of using the Proficy
Historian archive file format vs. simply storing the time series data in
plaintext files in Hadoop.
While the query performance is comparable between the
two storage models, the data footprint is substantially
different the archive file gives an 8x reduction in the size
of the data over plaintext, significantly reducing storage
costs.
Overall, placing tens to hundreds of terabytes of Industrial Big Data in Proficy
Historian HD for massively parallel analysis and data mining operations is
expected to lead to significant amounts of productivity and value for
customer through better management and operation of their equipment.

Getting Started
We provide single Node VMs for immediate learning/use
– Cloudera
– Pivotal Community edition
– New versions of Historian
We provide an engineer to train on
– Data Preparation
– Data Ingestion
– Data Access
Then access Data scientist to walk through analytics

Step 2
DVA process
– Workout with Customer to explain the VMs
– Big Data Engineer becomes familiar with the customer’s
process and expectations
– Develop Value assessment
• GE builds reference architecture with customer
• GE identifies backlog items to enhance the product for
the customer
• GE engineer helps develop the data ingestion process.
– Simultaneously sample sets of data are ingested to prove
out the expectations, and provide data for the data
scientist.

Step 3
• Deployment of the Data Capture system
– Data migrates from existing historical system
– Data is ingested into Big Data for current systems
– The Big Data system then has enough data to test out
analytics
• Data Scientist has been working with customer and
customer data to now deploy analytics to customer
data

On Going
Collaboration and sharing
• New product features are deployed to updated VMs
• New features are demoed/explained to customer
• Customer’s feedback is integrated into the solution
• Best practices are developed and shared amongst
customers
