U-2-5 Demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply the “rights” and
“checks” of medication administration to reduce risk of medication error
and ensure client safety.
This whole course is created around medication administration and the 11
rights and checks we have to perform. Because of this we consistently
practice the rights in both lab as well as in theory class. Before administering
any medications in lab, we have to check the first 5 rights three times and
then the final 6 rights at the bedside. By having this type of repetition, it will
be engrained in my head to use in my career as a nurse.
We learned the importance of the 11 rights and how the prevent medication
errors by staying organized as well as performing the first 5 checks 3 times at
the med cart and then the final 6 at the bedside. This is done to prevent
errors and preserve client safety. In all cases medication errors could put the
client safety at risk and every effort should be taken to prevent risk of safety.
I think I would rate myself between good and excellent. I am able to
consistently remember all of the rights and checks. The only reasons that I
would rate myself good is because occasionally I forget to ask “are you okay
taking this med?” at the bedside which is the right to refuse. This doesn’t
happen very often because I have developed a routine when administering
medications so I rarely forget. This was done both through repetition in the
lab as well as practicing med admin at home with smarties.
The 11 rights at the checks taken are going to be imperative in my practice
as a nurse because I will be administering medications every single day. By
doing the 11 checks it prevents myself from making errors and
compromising client safety.
I will be able to apply this every day in my nursing practice when I am
administering medications. This skill will be essential in preventing errors
and ensuring client safety. I think my strength will lie in my ability to stay
organized and I am meticulous in my checks. My weakness will be staying
focused and trying not to let other things around me interfere with my med
checks.
