LITTLE GIRL digs in the sand. BOAT approaches from the
distance in the ocean. She turns to look, the boat waves and
yells
BOAT
Hello!
TITLE CARD - "BASED ON A TRUE STORY"
GIRL
Hi!
BOAT
(mouth underwater,
spluttering)
What are you doing?
GIRL
I’m trying to dig to the moon!
BOAT
Oh! Why?
GIRL
To plant flowers on it to make it
prettier.
BOAT
I know the way! You have to
(mouth dips underwater)
gurgle gurgle blub blub blub gurgle
GIRL
What?
BOAT
I said...
(underwater again)
blub blub gulp gurgle glug glug
GIRL
(uncertain)
Okay... thanks...
2.
BOAT
Or was it left? No... right.
Digging montage... she gets lost...
GIRL
Which way did he say?
Digging... the shovel breaks through onto...
EXT. THE SURFACE OF THE SUN - DAY
GIRL
Hello!?
Suddenly the tower splits open down the middle, she backs
away. A WIZARD emerges, the same size/shape as the tower.
WIZARD
Welcome to the sun.
He leans down and picks her up, holding her upside down.
WIZARD (CONT’D)
Who are you? What do you want?
GIRL
Could I borrow a shovel?
WIZARD
That’s all? You don’t want me to do
any magic?
GIRL
I’m trying to dig to the moon...
He drops her, gesturing with his arms.
WIZARD
But that’s impossible! You DO need
magic to do that!
She falls to the ground, gets up.
3.
GIRL
No thanks, I just need a shovel.
WIZARD
You can’t get to the moon with a
shovel!
GIRL
I can...
WIZARD
But I have so many magical powers
that could help you!
GIRL
Can you pull a bunny rabbit out of
your hat?
GIRL
No, I just like bunnies.
She hugs the bunny. The wizard gets angry and grabs the
bunny away from her, stuffs it back in his hat, and storms
off, fed up. He shuts himself back in the tower, leaving her
alone.
Beat.
A shovel is tossed out from inside the tower. It lands in
front of the girl. She happily picks it up and starts
digging again.
As she digs, the wizard peeks out of the tower, curious in
spite of himself.
More digging...
The wizard comes out of the tower and looks down the hole.
He takes off his sunglasses to see further down.
The wizard leans further into the hole, then suddenly slips
and falls in.
EXT. THE MOON - DAY
The wizard falls out the other side of the hole. His hat
falls off and the bunny peeks out of it, and they fall to
the ground.
GIRL
Bunny!
WIZARD (CONT’D)
But it was just an ordinary shovel!
He tentatively tries to dig with it.
WIZARD (CONT’D)
There must be some trick to this...
He hears a sound behind him and drops the shovel, looking
around. It is the boat, climbing up the side of the moon.
BOAT
Hi! I came to see if you needed any
more help.
WIZARD
But how did YOU get here without
magic?
BOAT
I just took a shortcut across the
ocean!
5.
WIZARD
(totally confused)
...what?
BOAT
Do you need directions too? Maybe
this map will help!
The boat holds out a map, the wizard takes it. It is soaking
wet and falling apart, completely useless. The wizard drops
it. The girl grabs it and squeezes the water out over where
she planted the flowers.
GIRL
Okay, I’m done! Goodbye wizard!
(to bunny)
Let’s go!
WIZARD
(still totally confused)
...go where?!
The girl reaches up and grabs hold of a star in the sky, and
pulls herself up, climbing across the stars. The bunny hops
up and follows her.
BOAT
Wait for me!
The boat slides down the side of the moon, pull out to show
the moon floating in the middle of the ocean. The boat sails
away across the water.
The wizard stands alone, still in shock at what has
happened.
A flower grows where the girl planted it. He notices, and
leans down to look at it.
WIZARD
Ooh, pretty!
The girl and the bunny climb across the stars and away into
the distance.
THE END.
