MECHANICS
WHAT IS MECHANICS?

Physical science deals with the

state of rest or motion of bodies
under the action of force.
Why we study mechanics?

Static and dynamical mechanical systems are the heart of

all engineering today. The static systems range from
bridges, load bearing members of roofs to fasteners and
bolts. Dynamical systems are also ubiquitous in the form
of machines which convert electrical energy to
mechanical energy. Understanding the equations
governing these static and dynamical systems is at the
heart of this course.
Categories of Mechanics

Mechanics :
- Rigid-body Mechanics
- Deformable-body Mechanics
- Fluid Mechanics

Rigid-body Mechanics :
- Statics
- Dynamics
Categories of Mechanics

Rigid-body Mechanics:

Statics – Equilibrium Analysis of

particles and bodies.

Dynamics – Accelerated motion of

particles and bodies.
Kinematics and Kinetics
KINEMATICS
The branch of mechanics concerned
with the motion of objects without
reference to the forces which cause the
motion.
✓ Displacement ---Movement in a given
direction.
✓ Velocity----- Change in Displacement.
✓ Acceleration ----- Change in Velocity.
✓ Time ------- Ref. for Change.

KINETIC
Relating to or resulting from motion
• Depending on movement for its effect.
