Family Planning Cases:

Case 1:
Presenting Complaint
During the 8 am ward round, you see MW, a 31-year-old iTaukei female G2P2, who is now 4 hours post
caesarean section. Her AOG was 40¹ and the indication for the caesarean section was failed induction.
This is now her 2nd caesarean section.

Intra-Operative notes:
Blood loss of 300 ml, IDC was clear, transverse incision was made at the lower segment. Live male
infant, weighing 4.2 kg.

Post-op orders were:


1. Start on sips of fluid for now, change to soft diet by the evening
2. Ensure heparin is given.
3. Off IDC once she is mobilizing to the washroom
4. Sedation as charted – Pethidine 1mg/kg prn
5. Continue IV Antibiotics – Ampicillin 1g 6hourly
6. Change of dressing 48hours post-op.
7. Patient is refusing family planning saying that she will take herbal medicine.

Case 2
16-year-old healthy primip who has had a long labour and delivered normally a healthy baby boy. She is
a single mother and wishes to give her baby for adoption. She has plans to go back to high school in the
coming year. She wishes to use combined oral contraceptives.

Case 3
38-year-old G5P5, had a normal delivery 24 hours ago. She is stable but having some trouble
breastfeeding her baby. She has started to have a fever and slightly tachycardic. She is undecided about
which family planning method to use.
