➢ Define the following words giving their physical
characteristics and models:
• Access-layer switch
- These are those switches that directly interact with the
end users. It focuses on connecting nodes to the
network hence ensuring that packets are being
delivered to the end user devices.
- They operate on layer 2 of the OSI model.
- They include hubs, switches and others.
- Model examples are:
CISCO CATALYST WS-C3850-24U-L
- This is a manageable switch with 24 ports and a port
speed of 10/100/1000Base-T.
- It is rack mountable
- It operates on the access layer of the hierarchical
model.
• Manageable switches
- A manageable switch allows one to be able to
configure, manage and control the settings of our
network.
- Unlike unmanageable ports they have a console port
which makes it possible to have control over the traffic
in these switches.
- These can be used for creation of VLANS, bandwidth
management, access list services and others.
- In terms of security, there is the ability to monitor and
control the network to shut down active threats,
protect data and others.
- Model examples are:
CISCO CATALYST SG300-10
- Has 10 RJ-45 ports.
• Layer 3 switches
- Also known as a multilayer switch combines both the
job of a switch and a router.
- It acts like a router by forwarding packets between
different networks and like a switch by connecting
devices within the same subnet and performing
switching.
- It also supports routing protocols, inspection of
incoming packets and can make routing decisions based
on the source and destination addresses.
- It performs on both layer 2 and layer 3 of the OSI
Model.
- Model examples include:
CISCO CATALYST C3560-24TS-S
- It has 24 ethernet 10/100 RJ-45 ports
- Perform both layer 2 and layer 3 switching.
-
CISCO CATALYST C3850-48T-S
- Has a total number of 48 ports.
- Supports media such as twisted pair cables.
- It is rack-mountable.
-
CISCO CATALYST 4507R-E
- Has a total number of 7 expansion slots.
- It is a manageable switch and has redundant power
supply.
- It is layer 4 supported.
- It operates on the distribution layer.
-
- CISCO CATALYST C4900M-RF
- It has a total of 11 expansion slots of type X2.
- It is layer 3 supported and manageable.
- It operates on the distribution layer.
-
• Stackable switch
- This is a network switch which can operate on its own and
function fully but can also be set up to function together
one or more network switches hence the name stack as is
it a group of switches being grouped together.
- They are mostly rack-mounted, manageable switches.
- Model examples are:
CISCO CATALYST SG350X-24P-K9
- They are stacked and can do both layer 2 and layer 3
switching.
- It has 24 x 10Base-T/100BaseTX/1000Base-T RJ-45 port
and a console RJ45 port
- Has a RAM and flash memory of 512 and 256 respectively.
- Can operate on the distribution and core layer.
