Overflow Rate vs Gas Hold Up

¾ This Showed that the Rate of Water Floated Was

Different for Each Frother Family

¾ Frother Families Could Be Grouped by the Amount of

Water In the Froth

¾ Also, a Chemical Could Be Modified So that it Changed

From One Family to the Next
‰ C6 Alcohol Was Modified and it Performance Moved to a Higher
Overflow Class
‰ Clue Number 2
Past work on Coarse Particle Flotation

¾ Work Done by R. Klimpel Showed that by Alkoxylation of

Known Frother (Either Alcohols or Glycol Ethers), the
Frothers Became Stronger and Could Recovery More
Coarse Particles
‰ Clue Number 3

¾ This Was Probably Due to the Higher Water Content or

Thicker Bound Water Layer

¾ There Was Evidence that Frothers Could be Created With

Specific Characteristics
Coarse Particle Flotation from Klimpel’s Prior Work
Observations
¾ Frothers Can Be Classed By Gas Holdup, Overflow
Rate
¾ Non Frothing Materials Can Change Gas Hold Up
¾ Effects Of Chemistry Clear; e.g.:
‰ MIBC Similar to Hexanol
‰ Frothers Can be Modified to Change Class
™ C6 Alcohol Modified to ‘Higher’ Class
™ Klimpel Had Made Similar Point
ƒ Chemical Reactions Made Frothers Stronger

¾ Let’s Add Froth Property, e.g., Height

Developing New Flottec Frothers

Target: Substitute for MIBC

¾ “Strong” Frothers Made in the Past But Not “Weak”
Frothers
Approach:
¾ Take a Non Frothing, Short Chain Alcohol and
Modify
¾ Create a Family of Frothers Around this Chemistry
‰ Better Weaker Frothers Needed
‰ Literature Search Showed Very Little Work in this Area

Conclusions
¾ A New Frother Chemistry Has Been Developed Based on the Research
Work Done by the Hydrodynamic Characterization of Frothers

¾ The New Family of Frothers Perform Similar to MIBC but can be Made
to be Slightly Weaker to Slightly Stronger

¾ The New Family of Frothers May Be Able to Substitute for Frother

Families Such As TEB and Pine Oil but it is Unlikely they Will Be
Strong Enough to Perform Like the Standard Glycol Or Glycol Ethers

¾ The New Frother is Different than Other Alcohol Type Products in that
they are Water Soluble. This Presents its Own Set of Advantages and
Disadvantages

¾ Further Plant Tests are Being Planned to Fully Understand and Exploit
this New Frother Chemistry
