Wild Strawberries

A top-down crescent shawl, suitable for any yarn with good stitch-definition, and any yardage from about 300m/330yds upwards. The shawl is fully adaptable
in size, with body and border lace charts being repeatable as desired.
The lace stitch-patterns, Myth, Sweetheart and Paradise, were designed by Naomi Parkhurst. Further details, and other fascinating lace stitches, may be
found on her blog-site String Geekery: https://gannetdesigns.com

General notes
Wrong-side rows of shawl body and border are worked:
- p2, (p yo p) into yarnover, purl to 3 sts from end, (p yo p), p2
Apart from:
- Right-side purled stitches, which are correspondingly knit on wrong side
- Right-side double yarnovers, which are worked with (k p) on wrong side.

If the top edge of the shawl is a little tight, or has sides of unequal length,
you can add extra slack by starting one or both of right and wrong side
with (k1 yo k1) and (p1 yo p1), respectively, and dropping the redundant
yarnover on the return row. I find that I need to make this adjustment at
the start of all right-side rows, but only occasionally on wrong-side rows.

Variation: shawl with plain yoke and lace border

Work the set-up as directed, then your plain section – either garter-stitch
or stocking-stich/stockinette – with selvedges and increases as for the
lace charts. Finish at the end of a wrong-side row with stitch-count of
{multiple of 18, plus 7}, and increase needle-size before starting the lace
at chart 2.
If yarn is short, you could work chart 3 as just the first 18 rows, or omit
the chart entirely by jumping from chart 2 straight to chart 4.

When sewing in the yarn-end, it is

possible to weave it in to mimic
the rest of the top edge of the
shawl quite closely, creating a
near-invisible darn.

Shawl body
Work Chart 1 once; then Chart 2 as many times as you choose, followed by Chart 3 also ad lib. The second halves of Charts 2 and 3 are the same as the first
halves, which means that your repeats of Chart 2 may be ended after a row 6 or a row 12, as you prefer; likewise, repeats of Chart 3 may be ended after a
row 18 or a row 36.
Chart 1: work once only

Chart 2: repeat as you wish, finishing after either a row 6 or a row 12.

Chart 3: repeat as you wish, finishing after either a row 18 or a row 36.

Shawl border
Increase needle-size at the start of chart 4, and again if and when you think it necessary.
Work the chart as many times as you choose or your yarn will allow. Ideally, you should finish at the end of either a row 3 or a row 15. If you are keen to use
every last scrap of yarn, however, you could finish with any right-side row that does not include double-yarnovers.
You can lengthen the edging-points, if you wish, by working the purl-stitch columns of the final right-side row as (yo kyok yo) instead of p1. If the column is
already flanked by yarnovers in the charted pattern, don’t double the yarnovers: work (yo kyok yo) instead of (yo p1 yo).
Cast off very loosely on wrong side.

Chart 4: repeat as you wish.

Finally, for those who like to see the complete picture, the set of charts is given here as a single sequence:
Chart 1 = rows 1 to 4; Chart 2 = rows 5 to 16; Chart 3 = rows 17 to 52; Chart 4 = rows 53 to 76

If you prefer to work from this master-chart, please note the working instructions from previous pages:
- Charts 2, 3 and 4 may be repeated ad lib.
- Finish Chart 2 after a row 10 or a row 16, and Chart 3 after a row 34 or a row 52.
- Increase needle-size at the start chart 4 (and again if and when necessary). Ideally, finish your repeats of the chart at the end of a row 55 or a row 67
although, if you wish to use maximum yarn, any right-side row without double-yarnovers would be fine. Optionally, work the purl-stitch columns of that
final right-side row as (yo kyok yo) instead of p1, or (yo kyok yo) instead of (yo p1 yo). Cast off very loosely on wrong side.
