McGhee’s Bakery has been a family baker since 1936, with the original bakehouse in Oran
Street, Maryhill, Glasgow.
McGhee’s Bakery has steadily grown to become one of the largest bakeries on the West
Coast of Scotland moving to a purpose built, state of the art facilities, at the M8 Food Park in
Glasgow in 2005.
McGhee’s has an extensive range of bakery and confectionary products and supply major
catering groups, local authorities, independent retailers and Cash & Carry groups.
The premium product of rolls is currently selling over 3 million per week, of which over ½
million are the famous ‘crispy rolls’.
All the products are delivered daily across central Scotland and as far afield as Edinburgh,
Dunfermline, Stirling and Perth, all through the fleet of 40 wholesale delivery vans.
All of our clients and suppliers are committed to protecting and promoting the health,
safety and welfare of their employees.
If you have any issues you would like to raise you may talk to;
o Take reasonable care of your own health and safety and that of your fellow
workers
o Co-operate with McGhee’s and your agency in all health and safety matters
o Avoid interfering with or misusing anything provided for your health and
safety welfare
To ensure we can account for everyone in an evacuation you must scan in and out at the
start and end of your shift.
The fire alarm is a continuous bell and it is used for ALL emergency situations
When the alarm sounds, leave the building by the nearest exit and proceed to the muster
point
YOUR MUSTER POINT IS CLEARLY MARKED AND IS AT THE COMPACTOR AREA (near to the
main gate). IN THE EVENT OF AN EVACUATION, A ROLL CALL WILL BE TAKEN TO ENSURE
THAT EVERYONE IS OUT OF THE BUILDING SAFELY.
Evacuation procedures are posted throughout the site to remind you in the event of an
emergency.
o Run
Adherence to the personal hygiene policy by all employees sends a clear message to their
customers that everyone in this business takes product quality very seriously.
Please ensure you wash your hands thoroughly with hot water and soap BEFORE starting
work, AFTER breaks for eating, smoking & cleaning and ALWAYS after using the toilet. You
must wash your hands as you enter the bakery, even if you have washed them before.
Jewellery must NOT be worn, with the exception of a plain wedding ring
Rings and studs in exposed parts of the body, such as the ears, nose, tongues and eyebrows,
must NOT be worn
Fingernails must be kept short, clean and unvarnished. False nails are NOT permitted.
Please ensure any cuts, burns and abrasions are covered with a site issued blue metal
detectable plaster, which are available from the first aiders
Always ensure you clean as you go to ensure surfaces and working areas are kept clean, tidy
and free from trip hazards
Glass, china, porcelain and hard plastics are restricted on this site and absolutely NO glass,
china or hard plastics must enter the bakery
No smoking allowed onsite except at the designated smoking shelter. A smokers’ overcoat
must be worn over PPE. Employees found smoking out with the designated area may face
disciplinary action.
ALLERGEN CONTROL
You MUST NOT bring products that contain nuts or sesame seeds on site. This is to ensure
that allergen sufferers can safely consume McGhee’s product. Vending machines do not
contain nut products.
Mobile phones are not allowed in the bakery unless for authorised business use.
SICKNESS REPORTING
Therefore, if you are suffering from, or develop any food poisoning symptoms, such as
sickness or diarrhoea, you MUST inform your supervisor before you start work or as soon as
your symptoms start
In the event of a glass or hard plastic breakage there is a specific glass breakage procedure
which must be followed;
Our aim is to identify circumstances where someone could be injured and remedy them
BEFORE anyone is injured.
We need all employees to report any circumstances they believe may lead to an injury, or
any situation that nearly caused an injury, to their supervisor or manager so that the
appropriate action can be taken.
If you are injured at work YOU MUST REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY to your supervisor.

Understanding the use and need for personal protective equipment (PPE)
You will be provided with protective equipment and clothing appropriate to your job. This
may be;
• To protect the food you are making from contamination such as hair
o OR/AND
• To protect you from hazards in the workplace
o Hair net (covering all of your hair and the ears). To be put on before your
overalls
o Disposable jacket/overall/coveralls
o Change of footwear
Additional protective clothing may be provided to you depending on the job you are going
to be doing. This may include;
o Gloves
o Apron
o Eye protection/face shield
o Wet weather/outdoor clothing
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE CORRECT PPE YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO DO YOUR SHIFT
YOU AND YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE THE SITE
If provided with overalls or boiler suits, these must be done up with the sleeves rolled
down. All outdoor clothing must be covered.
PPE IS MANDATORY - YOU MUST WEAR ALL THE PPE PROVIDED TO YOU AT ALL TIMES - IT IS
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO WEAR THE CORRECT PPE
Dust from flour, grain and powdered ingredients can affect your health. They may irritate
the nose and chest and, in some cases, may cause sensitization. You MUST advise your
supervisor if you suffer from;
o Itchy eyes
o Chest tightness
o Wheezing
o Shortness of breath
Manual Handling
o Back pain
o Slipped disc
o Neck pain
o Shoulder and arm pain
o Other joint problems
Do not use any substances unless you have been given appropriate information about the
substances and the safe method of using it
Wear the correct protective clothing for the substance being used - if in doubt, ask
I have ticked the boxes that confirm I understood the key elements highlighted throughout
the induction.
