NT‐Link and Ethernet (FINS) communications are possible,
but not recommended because communications with variables are not
supported.
Except for enumerated data types, all basic data types and

You can create screens without being conscious of the differences
between Controller and HMIs.
The supported versions are shown below.

What is Fieldbus
Field + Bus
Field is an abstraction of the plant levels.
Bus is a set of common line that electrically/optically
connects various units (circuits) in order to transfer data
among them.

History of Fieldbus
History of Fieldbus
In the early times of distributed control system (DCS),
most field devices are communicated to controllers
t fi ld d i i t d t t ll
using analog (4‐20mA) signals.
Field Devices:
• Process Controllers
• Motor Starters (VFD)
• Instruments
• Sensors
Disadvantages
PLC 4-20 mA
• Process Information Limited
Frequency (Hz)
• Expensive gateways are needed
• Very complex
• Data are not real‐time VFD

Fieldbus system is then developed to replace any
point‐to‐point link between field devices and
controllers by a digital single link on which all

information is transmitted serially and

multiplexed in time.

Advantages of Fieldbus
The ability to connect new units on the bus becomes
more flexible.
The distances covered are greater.
Th di d
Substantial reduction in wiring.
A great reduction of the total costs.
