ASSIGNMENT NO -03
SUBJECT: MASS TRANSFER OPERATIONS-II CLASS: T.E
SEM.: VI YEAR: 2019-20

Q.1]: Discuss break through curve in unsteady state adsorption.

Q.2]: For multistage cross-current adsorption, explain material balance and explain the procedure
to estimate minimum amount of adsorbent.

Q.3]: A copper sulphate solution at 0.18 mol per litre is passed through a 99.3 g, 30.5 cm high
bed of amberlite ion exchange resin at 82.2 cm3/min. Outlet data was as follows:
Time 7 8 8.5 9 10 11 12 13 13.5 14.5 15
Water conc. 0 0.0033 0.0075 0.0157 0.0527 0.1026 0.1433 0.1634 0.1709 0.1778 0.18
(mol/lit)
If the breakthrough curve is defined here as being when C/Co reached 0.05, (a) Find breakthrough
time (b) Fraction of total resin capacity used by breakthrough time.

Q.4]: A water sample contains 12 ppm chloride, to be treated with activated carbon to reduce it
to
0.5 ppm. Find the minimum quantity of adsorbent/unit volume of feed. The equilibrium
distribution coefficient = c*/x = 0.8 (kg Cl2/m3 water)/(kg Cl2/kg Carbon).

Q.5]: Explain break through curve for adsorption in fixed bed. Derive equation for length of
unused bed (LUB).
