ASSIGNMENT II
Module 2: WATER POLLUTION

1. What is carbonaceous and nitrification demand in BOD?

2. How water pollutants are classified? List the major types of water Pollutants. Explain each.
3. Describe sampling and analysis of alkalinity, bacteriological measurements and suspended
solids in waste water.
4 Derive an expression for the D.O sag curve and critical oxygen deficit.
5. Show that the BOD 21/2 day at 300C is approximately same as BOD5 at 200C.
Assume ϴ= 1.056 (BOD5 = BOD at day 5)
6. Explain the BOD,COD & TOC tests performed for waste water analysis.
7. Describe determination of inorganic compounds such as nitrogen, phosphorus, trace
elements in waste water.
8. A wastewater with a BOD of 30 mg/lit is discharged through an outfall to a fresh stream of
mean velocity 0.1m/s. the DO upstream of the outfall is 8.2 mg/l. Assuming the
deoxygenation rate k 1 = 0.39 d-1 and the reaeration rate k2=0.41 d-1 , determine (a) the
time and distance downstream where DO is minimum and (b) the minimum DO.
9. Following BOD test was carried out in lab and results are tabulated as follows:-
Time in Day 0 1 2 3 4 5
(t)
BOD in mg/lit 0 32 56 85 105 110
Determine the reaction rate constant and ultimate BOD?
10 The town discharges 17,360 m3/d of sewage into a nearby stream. The stream has a
. minimum flow of 0.42 m3/s of 2.6 m depth and a velocity of 5.2 kmph. Other information
pertaining to the stream and sewage are as follows.
Temp oC DO(mg/l) BOD5(mg/l)
Stream 20 8.5 10
Sewage 25 1 200
The deoxygenation constant (k1) evaluated at 20oC=0.36d-1 . Determine the critical oxygen
deficit,DC, and its location Xc..
