of a variety of radio programs
with informational and educational
content, while at the same
time, guaranteeing a space for
democratic discussions of topics of
interest to the local communities,
with the purpose of creating
awareness about the importance of
strengthening our core values.

Radio CTC has a 70% educational content with the purpose of guiding
and developing topics of local interest, with emphasis in topics such as
child work and abuse, illness prevention, teen pregnancies, environment
conservation and protection, among others. We create and train groups
of people interested in producing and administering their own radio
programs and how to better interact with their radio audience.

Women on the Network

Women in the Network gives access to women to join specialized

areas of ICTs, such as telecommunications networks, language
programming and multimedia programming.

This initiative is directed exclusively to women studying computer

science or related careers, and from low-income backgrounds. At the
end of the 10-month course, the students are prepared to take the
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification as well as the
Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification.

The Office of the First Lady seeks to give women an opportunity to

penetrate specialized areas of ICTs, and therefore, Women in the
Network, was awarded the Gender Campaign Award for Latin America
and the Caribbean in 2007 by CISCO Networking Academy.

English Immersion for Competiveness
This program for English as a
second language is an intensive
Comunity Technology Centers (CTC’s)
course promoted by the Ministry of
Higher Education and adopted and
implemented by the CTCs, with the aim
at giving better job opportunities to
Dominicans with excellent knowledge
of this language.

The main purpose is to increase

competitiveness within national and
international markets and boosting
the economic development of the
Dominican Republic.

21
CTC Volunteers
It involves university students to the productive
sectors of the country by applying knowledge ac-
quired at the university in order to solve local

problems. The selected students thus become Au-
tonomous Development Interns (PDA) in the Com-
munity Technology Centers and become part of a
mixed learning experience and active community
participation.

The CTCs also rely on the presence of the Peace

Corps Volunteers of the United States that serve
for two years in different impoverished communi-
ties were they exchange knowledge with locals
and help learn from each other.

Journalists for Development
In Alliance with the School of Communications of the University of Miami,
the ‘Journalists for Development’ program seeks to train young entrepre-
neurs and community leaders in the responsible use of Information and
Communications Technologies (ICTs) available at the CTCs. These young
people become the voice of the community, and are able to communicate
the interests of their community, promote wealth and community dialogue
for the development of society.

The main goal is to have local journalists that can present their rural com-
munity with balanced and unbiased information on topics of interest for
their integral development.

BachiNet
BachiNET emerges as an opportunity

Comunity Technology Centers (CTC’s)

to complete high school courses for
Dominicans that were not able to finish.
Through our partnership with the Virtual
University at Tecnológico de Monterrey,
we are able to offer a study plan and one-
on-one highschool tutoring that can be
accessed from the Community Technology
Centers and the computer labs of the
Ministry of Education.

BachiNET is certified by the Ministry of

Education, and the program will allow
students to finish high school in three
years and be ready to enroll in university
or study at a community college. The
plan of studies is made up of common
high school subjects but reinforced by
cross sectional topics that guarantee an
integral education for students.
