Notes on the Chart:

1. While determining the status of an Ism, we will look for the ending combination first and then
the ending sound.
2. Ending combinations are fixed in their forms. I.e. Aatun ( ‫ ) ات‬is a combination but aanun (‫ )آن‬is
not. Pay attention to the Alif ( ‫) ا‬, Wa ( ‫) و‬, and Ya ( ‫ ) ي‬in these combinations wherever present.
Also pay attention to the “Open Ta ( ‫ ”) ت‬in the Aatun/Aatin combination. It has to be a ‫ ت‬and
not a Round ta ( ‫) ة‬.
3. A letter will be followed by an Alif ( ‫ ) ا‬if it has 2-Jabar ( ‫( ) ه‬the proper Arabic term is fatHaan).
The exception to the above is Hamza (‫ )ء‬and Round Ta ( ‫) ة‬.
We’ll use this as a clue to identify the Heavy form of a few of the ending combination/sounds.
E.g.
