Role of Cookies in e-commerce

Cookies are a small file that are stored to user’s browser from the server to keep track of
user’s activity. It sends data from the user’s browser to the server. The term “cookie” came
from “magic cookie” which was coined by web browser programmer Lou Montulli. Cookies
just sends data just as it is, doesn’t alter anything. Cookies play an important part for any e-
commerce website. Cookies keep the track of customers who visited their and personalize
their website according to the user’s taste and preference. For example – if I prefer books,
watches or shoes, Amazon.com will show recommendations of those to me. But a person
who visits the website at the same time as me will be shown recommendations as his/her
preference. So every user get to enjoy the personalized service of the website. Cookies keep
track of user’s activity and visits as well as track of cart while user is serving through the
website. If there are no cookies, every time the user goes to a new webpage, there would
no product in cart. It would be impossible for a user to buy anything or have a wish list from
website. Cookies help the website to build a database and the owner can have a clear idea
what his/her customers want and demand. Cookies make the online shopping experience
better. If a customer had to fill out information every time they visit the website, customers
would be irritated. So, cookies plays an important role for any e-commerce business.
