Numerousinnovativesystemshavebeenintroducedandhaveopenedthewayforhighlyautomated
driving.Itisplannedthatthetechnicalprerequisiteswillhavebeenlaidforan“Autobahnpilot”by2020
sothatwewillbeabletoofferhighlyautomateddrivingforthefirsttime.
Atpresent,however,theappropriatelegalfoundationshavenotbeenlaidforautonomousdriving.
Driversarestillexpectedtodrivewithbothhandsonthesteeringwheel,althoughsystemsarealready
inplacetodrivethevehicleautonomouslyincertainsituations.
ThealreadycomprehensiverangeofDriverAssistanceSystemshasbeenexpandedagainintheG30
toincluderevolutionarynewsystems.SystemssuchasIntersectionWarningareinuse.EvasionAid
ispresentedforthefirsttimewiththelaunchoftheG30.Forevengreaterconvenience,therestart
timeontheActiveCruiseControlStop&Gofunctionhasbeenincreased,andthedetectionofmore
informationandtheincorporationoffurthersensorshasmademoredriver-likedrivingcharacteristics
possible.

19.8.Limitsofthesystem
Thedetectionofobjectscantesttheultrasonicmeasurementsystemtoitslimits.Severalexamples
ofthisareshownbelow:
• Withtrailertowbarsandcouplings.
• Iftheobjectsarethinorwedge-shaped.
• Iftheobjectsareprojectingandelevated,e.g.wallprojectionsorloads.
• Iftheobjectshavecornersandsharpedges.
• Iftheobjectshavefinesurfacesorstructures,e.g.fences.
Lowobjectsthatarealreadydisplayed,e.g.curbs,mayfallwithintheblindspotofthesensorsbefore
orafteracontinuousalarmsounds.Itwouldnotbepossibletodetectobjectsthatarehigherupand
projecting,e.g.wallprojections.Parkingspacesmaybedetectedalthoughthesearenotsuitable.
Theremaybeotherfunctionallimitationsinthefollowingsituations,forexample:
• Ifthesensorsaresoiledoricedup.
• Heavyfog,rainorsnow.
• Onunevensurfaces,e.g.gravelroads.
• Onslipperysurfaces.
• Onsteepinclinesordownhillgradients.
• Ifleaveshavegatheredorsnowhaspiledupintheparkingspace.
Toensuretheultrasonicsensorsremainfullyoperational,theymustbekeptcleanandfreeofice.
Whencleaningthesensorsusingahighpressurecleaner,avoiddirectandsustainedcontactwitha
high-pressurewaterjet.Furthermore,whenusinghighpressurecleaners,adistanceofatleast1ft
(30 cm)fromthesensorsmustbemaintained.
TheParkingManeuveringAssistant(PMA)cannotreplacethedriver'spersonaljudgementofthe
trafficsituation.Alsocheckthetrafficsituationaroundthevehiclebylookingaround,otherwisethere
maybeariskofanaccidentasaresultofroadusersorobjectswhichlieoutsidethedetectionrangeof

21.CruiseControl
21.1.Introduction
TwocruisecontrolfunctionscanbeusedintheG30.Thecruisecontrolwithbrakingfunction,
DynamicCruiseControl(DCC),ispartofthestandardequipment.
ACC Stop&GocanbeobtainedifthecustomeroptsfortheActiveDrivingAssistantPlus,optional
equipment(OE 5AT),asitiscontainedinthisequipmentpackage.
Thecruisecontrolsystemssupportthedriverwithadaptingthespeed,distanceanddrivingstyleto
thetrafficconditions,butdonotrelievehimofhisresponsibility.Thedrivermustactivelyintervene,
e.g.bybraking,steeringortakingevasiveaction,asotherwisethereisariskofanaccident.
21.2.Cruisecontrolwithbrakingfunction
ThecruisecontrolwithbrakingfunctionisincludedaspartoftheG30'sstandardequipment.The
systemisalsoknownas"DynamicCruiseControl"(DCC).DynamicCruiseControl(DCC)supports
thedriveronroadswithlesstrafficbykeepingthespeedconstantirrespectiveofrollingresistances
(incline,downhilldrivingandvehicleload).Inspiteofthesupport,thedriverremainsresponsiblefor
controlofthevehicle.ItispossibletooverridetheDCCfunctionatanytimebybrakingoraccelerating
thevehicle.
21.2.1.Operation
Thedriverhastheoptionofadjustingthesetspeedinsmallorlargeincrements,whichisthenset
andmaintainedbythesystembycontrollingthedriveandbrakes.Itcanbechangedusingtheleft-
handswitchblockonthemultifunctionsteeringwheel(MFL).Thespeedisincreasedorreduced
by1 mphbytappingtherockerswitch.Eachtimetherockerbuttonispressedbeyondthepressure
point,thespeedincreasesorreducesby5 mph.TheDCCsteadilymaintainsaselectedspeedfrom
approximately20mph(30km/h).
Thesetspeedisindicatedintheinstrumentclusterinthefamiliarway;byamarkthatmovesroundthe
speedreading.Notesareaddedtothedisplaysintheinstrumentcluster,ifnecessary.
Ifthevehicle'sowndecelerationisnotsufficienttomaintainthepresetspeed,thebrakeisactivated
accordingly.
IfECOPROorSPORTmodeisactivated,cruisecontrolisalsosettoafuel-efficientorsportydriving
style.Duetothefuel-efficientdrivingstyleinECO PROdrivingmode,insomesituationsthevehicle's
speedmayexceedordropbelowthesetspeed,forexampleondownhillgradientsorinclines.

TheActiveCruiseControlwithStop&Gofunction(ACC Stop&Go)isofferedasafunctionoftheActive
DrivingAssistantPlus,optionalequipment(OE5AT),fortheG30.
ACCStop&Goadjustsadriver-specifiedsetspeedand,ifrequiredbythetrafficsituation,also
automaticallyadjuststhepreselectedfollowingdistancetothevehicledrivingahead(detected
vehiclesincludepassengercars,trucksandmotorbikes).TheapplicationrangeofACCStop&Go
rangesfromhigherspeedsdowntoastandstill.Thedistanceandthespeedareautomaticallyadjusted
inthisrange.

G30ActiveCruiseControl(ACC)Stop&Go
Dependingonthestationarytime,drivingofffromastandstillisperformedautomaticallyorin
responsetoapromptbythedriver.ACC Stop&Gonotonlydetectsvehiclesthatareslowlycoming
toastop,butalsostationaryvehicles.
Duetoimprovedmonitoringinfrontofthevehicle,thesystemiscapableofreactingmorequicklyto
vehiclesswinginginandoutandturningoff.
TheextendedapplicationrangehasbeenachievedbytheincorporationoftheKAFASstereocamera.
ImagedataisevaluatedbytheACC Stop&Gosystem.TheKAFAScontrolunitclearlydetectsvehicles
whentheirrearendsarerecordedbythecamera.Inaddition,theKAFAScontrolunitensuresthatthe
drivinglaneinformation,vehiclepositionsandmovementsaredetermined.

Thankstotheradarsensor'simproveddetectioncapabilityandalignmentwiththeimagedatafrom
theKAFASstereocamera,vehiclesinneighboringlanesarealsodetected.Ifthesevehiclesaredriving
intheirownlane,thenACCStop&Goadaptsthespeedtothevehiclepullinginorvehicleahead.Asa
result,atimelagselectedbythedriverisconstantlymaintained.
ACCStop&Goadjuststhespeedifthereisnovehicledrivingdirectlyaheadandautomatically
switchestodistancecontrolifthesensorsystemdetectsaslowervehicleinitslane.Thesystem's
Stop&Gofunctionbringsthevehicletoacompletestandstillifnecessary.
Detectingthevehicleinfrontofthevehicleinfront
AdditionallydetectingthevehicleinfrontofthevehicleinfrontislikewisenewontheG30.
Thisisanalyzedusingthesensorsalreadyfitted.Objectdetectionisbasedonafusionofthefront
radarsensorandtheKAFASstereocamera.Bothsensorsare,inprinciple,capableofdetectinga
vehicletwopositionsahead.
Inmostcases,thevehicleinfrontofthevehicleinfrontis,however,concealedbythevehicleinfront,
whichiswhythecameracangenerallynotdetectit.Thefrontradar,however,consistentlyprovides
gooddetectionqualityhereby“lookingunder”thevehicleinfront.
Theadvantagesofthisareasfollows:
• Improved"driver-like"speedgoverningbehavior
• Smootherfollowingdriving(“ACCcruising”)
• Enhanceddynamicsfortrafficlight-controlledjourneys
• Driver-likebehaviorwhenapproachingdistantobjects
Evaluationofultrasounddata
SinceboththefrontradarsensorandtheKAFASstereocameraareonlyoflimiteduseforclose-range
monitoring,theultrasonicdatafortheACC Stop&GosystemisevaluatedforthefirsttimeontheG30.
Thedataisprovidedbythefrontultrasonicsensorsalreadydescribed.Theseareneededtomonitor
thecloserangeinfrontofthevehicleforfreedomfromobstacles.
Couplingtothenavigationsystem
ImprovedcorneringbehaviorismadepossiblebycouplingACC Stop&Gotothenavigationsystem.
Thiscontributestoafurtherimprovementofdriver-likebehavior.Thisalsotakesintoconsiderationthe
intentiontoturnofftheroadandintersections,amongotheraspects.
Restarttime
TherestarttimeafterautomaticbrakingtoastopbyACC Stop&Gopreviouslyofapproximately
3 secondshasbeenraisedtoapproximately 30 secondsontheG30.
Theprerequisiteforextendedrestartingisthatthevehicleislocatedonahighwayoradivided
highwayoutsidethetown.
105
G30DriverAssistanceSystems
21.CruiseControl
Ifthevehicleinfrontstartsdrivingagainafterbeingstopped(formorethanapproximately 3 seconds
orlongerthanapproximately 30 secondsonhighwaysanddividedhighways),anoteisshowntothe
driver.TodriveoffagainthedrivermustconfirmthisnotebypressingtheRES/CNCLbuttonorthe
acceleratorpedal.
Additionalconvenienceisprovidedbytheextendedrestarttimewithoutdriverintervention.
ACCStop&Godoesnotonlysupportthedriverinflowingtraffic,butalsointrafficjamsituations,both
onmultiple-lanehighwaysandordinaryroadsandonurbanarterialandringroads.
Theadjustmentrangeforthesetspeedislimitedtoamaximumof130mph(210 km/h).
IfECOPROorSPORTmodeisactivated,theActiveCruiseControlwithStop&Gofunctionisalso
settoafuel-efficientorsportydrivingstyle.Duetothefuel-efficientdrivingstyleinECO PROdriving

24.1.5.Steeringinterventions
Ifthecurrentcourseofthevehicledeviatestoomuchfromthetargettrajectory(pathcurve),asteering
correctionisinitiated.
Thesteeringinterventionisacorrectivemeasure.Thismeansthedriverisnotrelievedofhisdutyto
steerthevehicle.Asthecorrectivesteeringinterventionsarelimitedtoapproximately1.5 m/s²based
onthelateralacceleration,thesystemcannotnavigatecurvesabovetherespectivespeed-dependent
curveradiuswithoutthedriver'sassistance.Thedrivermustthereforesteerthevehicleatthesame
timeinordertostayontheroadway.
Thetargettrajectoryandrequiredsteeringcorrectionsarecalculatedbasedonthedrivingspeedas
follows:
Speedrange0to43mph(0to70 km/h):
• Thepositionandpreviousmovementsofthevehicledrivingaheadaregivenprioritywhen
determiningtheappropriatesteeringcorrections.
• Detectedlanemarkingsaretakenintoaccounttoavoidunwantedsteeringcorrectionsthat
wouldresultinleavingthelane.
• Correctivesteeringinterventionsinthedirectionofthecenterofthelaneareinitiatedifthe
vehicledetectsthereisnotavehicledrivingahead.
Speedrange43to80mph(70 km/hto130 km/h):
• Correctivesteeringinterventionsinthedirectionofthecenterofthelaneareinitiated.
• Itispossibletobridgethegapforalimitedtimewherelanemarkingsarenotdetectedby
estimatingthecourseofthelanebasedonthevehicledrivingahead.
Speedrange80to130mph(130 km/hto210 km/h):
• Correctivesteeringinterventionsinthedirectionofthecenterofthelaneareinitiated.
• Forsafetyreasonsaboveadrivingspeedofapproximately80mph(130 km/h)thecourseof
thelaneisnotestimatedusingthevehicledrivingahead.
Thevehicledrivingaheadisgivenpriorityasthe"correctiontarget"atspeedsuptoapproximately43
mph(70 km/h)duetothelimiteddetectionoflanemarkings.
Intrafficjamsorslow-movingtrafficfollowingdistancesareoftenextremelysmall(<30ft(< 10 m))due
totailgatingandlanesaheadareoftenpartiallycoveredduetostaggereddriving.
ThismeanstheKAFASstereocameraisunabletocorrectlyinterpretthelanemarkingsinsomecases.
Whenclassifyingtheobjectdrivingahead,vehiclessuchasmotorbikesarenotusedasthe"correction
target".

Thecollisionwarninghasalimitedcapacityfordetection.Asaresult,incorrectordelayedwarnings
mayoccurandconsequentlyEvasionAidislimitedinitsoperation.Itisalsopossiblethatthefollowing

• Aslowvehiclewhendrivingoffathighspeed.
• Vehiclesthatsuddenlyswerveordeceleraterapidly.
• Vehicleswithanunusualrearvieworwithinsufficientlyvisiblerearlights.
• Partiallyconcealedvehicles.

• Heavyfog,rain,sprayorsnow.
• Insufficientlight.
• Stronglightinthecameralens.

• Onrestrictionordeactivationofthedrivingdynamicssystems,forexampleDSCOFF.
• DuringthecalibrationprocessfortheKAFASstereocameraimmediatelyaftervehicle
deliveryoracamerachange.
EvasionAiddoesnotreleasethedriverfromhiscomprehensiveresponsibilityasthedriver.Therecan
