1.1 INTRODUCTION:
1.1.1 The Hoffman Engineering Model ANV-20/20 night vision device optical
alignment system, is a portable reference device which facilitates accurate
goggle adjustment by the user, just prior to a mission. Using a wide aperture
collimator, the test set provides for simultaneous focal and position adjustment to
both halves of a goggle.
1.1.2 During pre-mission NVD adjustment, the user must set up the goggle IPD
spacing, adjust the goggle mount for proper tilt and eye relief, and adjust the
focus of each eyepiece and objective lens assembly. Conventional "Eye Lanes"
provide a target for setting goggle focus that is too close for accurate adjustment
of the goggle objective lenses, and force the user to refocus the NVD during the
mission. "Eye Lanes" also require considerable floor space and usually lack
accurate illumination levels for checking goggle performance.
1.1.3 The ANV-20/20 optical alignment system provides an accurate target at correct
infinity focus and allows proper adjustment of all goggle parameters, prior to a
mission. Using a large folded-mirror collimator, the ANV-20/20 projects multi-bar
patterns of known resolution at light levels that are appropriate for both 'high-
light' and low-light’ NVD resolution. The device may be used with any goggle
type.
1.1.4 Once the user has set the goggle for best focus using the high-light level mode,
the goggle can be checked for low-light level performance by pressing and
holding the Low Light level pushbutton.
1.1.5 The Low Light level mode is provided to check goggle performance under
simulated starlight conditions. Goggle focus should not be adjusted under low-
light conditions, due to the loss of critical resolution capability. Forcing the user to
press and hold the Low Light level pushbutton acts as a reminder to focus the
NVD only in the high-light level mode.
1.1.6 In addition to goggle focus and resolution, the ANV-20/20 provides an eight-step
gray scale pattern that checks the dynamic range of the goggle. The gray scale
covers a range of 2 decades and effectively checks the ability of each image
tube in the goggle to perform under both high and low-light level conditions.
Used with the two available light levels, the gray scale check provides a quick
assessment of image tube dynamic performance. Checks for high and low-light
level resolution, in conjunction with the gray scale checks, can greatly reduce the
possibility of starting a mission with a defective pair of goggles.
6
CTM ANV-20/20
REVISION H 28 OCT 2014
1.1.7 Power is provided by four D-cell batteries that are housed in sealed
compartments on either side of the test set front panel. Quick access is provided
by the watertight compartment caps and battery life is ample for more than 1500
goggle adjustments, under normal ambient temperature conditions.
1.2.1 The ANV-20/20 NVD test set is an electro-optical reference device that projects
a high resolution reticle image at correct infinity focus. The image viewed by the
user through the NVD is a bright pattern on a dark background. Use of a bright
pattern emphasizes NVD focus and allows for the dynamic range gray scale
check.
1.2.2 The collimator optics serves both sides of the NVD at once and allows the test set
to use a single light source and reticle. Binocular collimation between the images
presented to the NVD is accurate at infinity focus by the constraints of the optical
design. No adjustment of the test set is required during maintenance to maintain
collimation accuracy.
1.2.3 An array of six LED sources is used to illuminate the test set reticle. The
luminance of the array is controlled by a high-stability photo detector. This
arrangement minimizes long-term changes in output of the test set collimator.
1.2.4 Front panel controls for the test set consist of two operator pushbuttons and two
LED indicators which report the test set status and battery condition. A single
press of the system ON pushbutton gives the user three minutes of test set
operation time for goggle adjustment. The test set turns itself OFF at the end of
the three minute cycle, minimizing battery drain. The test set is immediately
ready for the next operation cycle at the end of each three-minute test period.
1.2.5 Operational status of the four D-cell batteries is indicated on the front panel by a
green LED. When the test set POWER ON button is pressed and held, the
green Battery Condition OK LED will light if there is sufficient battery voltage to
perform the test properly. When the Battery Condition OK indicator fails to
light, the batteries must be replaced.
1.2.6 Under normal operating temperatures, the four alkaline D-cell batteries will
provide a minimum of 1500 three-minute test cycles before the Battery OK
indicator fails to light during the turn-on check. Light level accuracy is
maintained for at least 100 additional tests, beyond the point where the battery
condition indicator first fails to light.
1.2.7 To insure that the NVD focussing and dynamic range checks are not affected by
room ambient lighting, the ANV-20/20 provides an ambient light monitor detector
circuit and a front panel LED indicator. When room light entering the collimator
area is below a preset level ( 0.1 fc ), a GREEN LED lights, indicating that the
light level is 'OK'. When ambient lighting exceeds the preset level, the indicator
will not light, indicating that the room lighting should be reduced in order to
properly perform the checks.

REVISION H 28 OCT 2014
1.2.8 The ANV-20/20 NVD test set is designed, packaged, and tested to MIL-T-28800
as a Type II, Class 3, Style C, portable electronic test set, intended for both fixed
and portable operation. The unit is water-resistant when the ruggedized case is
closed.
1.2.9 The top panel of the test set is covered by a tough polymer overlay that contains
the system graphics and provides waterproof windows for the LED indicators.
The special battery holders, pushbutton switches, and the collimator window are
all sealed against dust and moisture.
1.2.10 During use, the ANV-20/20 can be placed on any convenient support, or mounted
on the optional adjustable wall bracket. The user positions the goggle to be
adjusted so that the objective lenses are roughly centered in the collimator light
shield. There is ample freedom to move the goggle in all directions during the
adjustment procedure and the goggle does not need to contact the test set.

REVISION H 28 OCT 2014
2.1 INTRODUCTION:
2.1.1 The ANV-20/20 NVD optical alignment system is intended for both fixed and
mobile support of night vision goggles.
2.1.2 Facility requirements for portable use of the NVD test set should include sufficient
shelter to keep the test area free from precipitation, and allow adjustment of the
goggles without the use of gloves. For low-light resolution checks, the area must
be capable of reduced light levels to allow the user to become partially dark-
adapted.
2.1.3 For fixed facility use, the NVD test set should be maintained in a room capable of
total darkness when required. When room or ambient lighting cannot be
controlled, construct a small closet ( 3ft inside width, by 4 ft inside depth,
minimum ) to house the test set. See Figure A-4.
2.1.4 The recommended mounting position for the ANV-20/20 is on a wall, using the
optional wall-mounting bracket with adjustable height rails. The test set must be
positioned so that the user can look directly into the viewing port without tipping
the helmet forward or backward. See Figure 5-1.
2.1.5 Where possible, arrange for a lighted handle wall switch near the test set to allow
the room or compartment lights to be turned on and off by the user. Subdued
lighting in the immediate area of the test set is desirable, so that the user can
become accustomed to lower light levels before focussing the NVD.
2.1.6 Avoid mounting the test set in a position or area where the user may encounter
high intensity lighting. Exposure to high intensity lighting before using the ANV-
20/20 will interfere with the user’s ability to obtain proper adjustment and may
damage the NVD.
2.2.1 The ANV-20/20 NVD test set operates on four readily available Alkaline D-cell
batteries, which are easily replaced from the front panel.
2.2.3 Front panel indicators show battery status and give ample time for battery
replacement before functional operation of the test set is affected.
2.2.2 AC line operation is not required. Typical use requires battery replacement once
per year.

REVISION H 28 OCT 2014
2.3 INITIAL INSPECTION:
2.3.1 Upon receipt of the NVD test set, perform a visual inspection to insure that all
system components and allocated accessories are present and that no physical
damage has occurred.
A. Open the instrument cases and check for damage to the collimator glass cover
plate, or any of the controls or battery compartments.
B. Open each of the battery compartment covers by unscrewing the cover CCW. A
coin or large flat-blade screwdriver is required to remove the battery compartment
covers.
C. During transit, batteries should not be installed in the test set. Check each
battery compartment for damage or signs of corrosion.
D. Install a set of four D-cell Alkaline batteries in the test set. Observe battery
polarity as each cell is installed. The [ + ] terminal of each battery faces up as
the battery is inserted into the holder. Tighten the battery compartment covers
finger-tight only ( using a coin ). The top surface of the cover should be flush
with the mounting ring.
A. Check the charge status of the system batteries. Press and hold down the
POWER ON push-button. The battery condition indicator should light. If the
green OK battery condition indicator does not light, replace the battery set with
four new D-cells.
B. If the battery voltage indicator shows green for OK, the unit may be used or
stored as required. If the unit is to be placed in storage, remove the batteries
from the test set and place in the cover storage compartment.
C. If the test set is to be deployed, ensure that a new set of batteries is placed in the
cover storage compartment.
D. Remove the test port cover. With room lights ON, press and hold the test set ON
button. The green Ambient Light OK indicator should NOT light. This check
assumes room lighting produces more than 0.1 footcandles incident at the test
set window.
E. Replace the test port cover and tighten the thumbscrews ( finger tight only ).
When the test set ON button is pressed and held down, the green Ambient Light
OK indicator should be lighted.
14

REVISION H 28 OCT 2014
F. Check the test set cycle timer. Use a pair of goggles to observe the test set
reticle output. With the test set OFF, press and release the POWER ON button.
Check that the unit operates for a period of 3 minutes 30 seconds before the
unit shuts itself off.
G. Use an operational NVD to check the test set collimator. Set the goggle objective
lens focus to infinity. Turn room lights OFF, turn the test set and NVD ON.
Observe the test set collimator through the NVD. Adjust the NVD eyepiece lens
focus as necessary for best image. The test set image should appear in clear
focus with the NVD set at or near the infinity stops.
H. If the test set focus is in question, carefully focus the NVD outside (at night) on a
clearly-defined object at least 100 meters distant. Use care to retain the objective
lens focus setting. Perform the same check on the test set described in step G.
above. The image viewed through each side of the collimator should appear in
clear focus with the NVD focus set for best focus on the distant target.
I. If the test set battery condition indicator, ambient light indicator, collimator focus,
or cycle timer do not perform as indicated above, return the test set for
maintenance.
15
CTM ANV-20/20
REVISION H 28 OCT 2014
A. Remove the test set cover. Turn the test set on by pressing the POWER ON
button. Check the battery condition and replace the four batteries if the green
BATTERY CONDITION 'OK' indicator does not light when the power ON button is
pressed.
B. Whenever possible, arrange for a lighted handle wall switch near the test set to
allow the room or compartment lights to be turned on and off by the user. Where
possible, arrange for subdued lighting in the immediate area of the test set so the
user can become accustomed to lower light levels before focussing the NVD.
C. Avoid mounting the test set in a position or area where the user may encounter
high intensity lighting in the NVD field of view. Exposure to high intensity lighting
may damage the NVD and will interfere with the user’s ability to obtain proper
adjustment.
2.7.1 The ANV-20/20 NVD test set is housed in a waterproof transit case, suitable for
local transportation and extended storage only. For transit via commercial
carrier, use standard commercial practice packaging methods.
2.7.2 When returning the ANV-20/20 for repair or calibration, use appropriate
packaging methods to prevent damage to the case hardware. A double wall
corrugated shipping box with at least 3 inches of resilient packing material on
all sides is recommended.
CAUTION
To reduce the possibility of damage to the test set, remove all batteries
from the front panel compartments and store in the case lid compartments
before shipping or storage.
CAUTION
Before deploying the test set to the field, ensure that a new set of four
D-cell batteries is included in the case lid compartment.
CAUTION
Do not use general cleaning agents on the system optics. All optical
surfaces have anti-reflection coatings and must be cleaned using solutions
specifically intended for coated optics.
CAUTION
Do not use excess optics cleaner on the collimator cover glass.
16
CTM ANV-20/20
REVISION H 28 OCT 2014
2.7.3 Carefully clean the collimator optics with a soft optical cloth and a small amount of
coated-lens cleaning fluid. Wipe the front panel with a damp cloth to remove dirt
and other contamination. Use of non-abrasive cleaning agents is acceptable on
the front panel surface and instrument case only. Do not allow cleaning agents to
flow into the collimator port, the battery compartments, or the gap between the top
panel and the transit case.
2.7.4 For commercial shipping, box the NVD test set with a minimum of 3 inches of
packing material on all sides of the case. Do not use the test set system case as
a shipping container without additional protective packaging.

REVISION H 28 OCT 2014
3.1 INTRODUCTION:
3.1.1 The ANV-20/20 NVD test set combines the capability to accurately adjust NVD
focussing with quick checks on NVD system resolution and dynamic range.
System resolution is checked using multi-bar patterns with four elements in two
orientations for each level of resolution. NVD Dynamic Range is checked using
an eight-step gray scale, in conjunction with the two preset test levels.
3.1.2 The wide aperture collimator allows the user to center the goggle over the test
port and adjust both objectives and eyepieces without further head movement.
The user must close the opposite eye when focussing each side of the NVD.
When both sides are critically focussed, the user should observe the projected
reticle with both eyes to check goggle collimation.
3.1.3 Each user should know and set the goggle IPD ( eye spacing ) before attaching
the device to the helmet. Once the goggle is focussed, make any necessary
adjustments for the eye relief and tilt.
3.1.4 Goggle performance is evaluated with the ANV-20/20 using two mechanisms;
resolution at high and low-light levels, and gray scale step visibility. Observation
of the resolution chart bar patterns gives a direct indication of NVD resolution
performance by noting the line pair density or equivalent Snellen resolution of the
finest-detail bursts that can be resolved.
3.1.5 Both high-light and low-light test levels are provided for the resolution test. The
high-light test ( normal mode ) is used for critical goggle focus. This test level is
equivalent to viewing average terrain under full moon illumination.
3.1.6 Pressing the low-light mode pushbutton allows the user to check resolution
performance under clear sky starlight illumination conditions. The low-light
mode is for checking performance only. No focus adjustments are to be
made while the low-light-level pushbutton is pressed.
3.1.7 The gray scale pattern provides an assessment of system dynamic range. The
useful range of light levels for each tube in an NVD is determined by noting the
contrast ( or lack of contrast ) between adjacent segments in the gray scale
pattern. In the normal ( high-light level ) mode, if there is visible contrast between
each gray scale segment, the NVD has sufficient gain and dynamic range to deal
with targets from full moon to clear sky starlight levels.
3.1.8 In the low-light mode, the limiting performance of each tube in an NVD is checked.
The last gray scale pattern resolved can be distinguished from both the brighter
and darker adjacent patterns. Typical NVDs can resolve the first three or four
gray scale patterns with the test set in the low-light mode.

3.2.1 Refer to figure 3-1 for locations of the front panel controls.
3.2.2 The red POWER ON push-button starts the system interval timer and enables the
system status indicator lights. The interval timer provides an automatic OFF
function at the end of three minutes of use. The system status indicators are
active only while the Power ON button is pressed.
3.2.3 The black LOW-LIGHT CHECK push-button reduces the system test level from
high to low while the button is pressed. When the button is released, the system
returns to the high-light level mode.
3.2.4 Two green LED indicators are provided. The AMBIENT LIGHT OK indicator
lights while the system POWER ON button is pressed if the room ambient light
entering the test set port is less than 0.1 footcandles.
3.2.5 The BATTERY CONDITION OK indicator lights while the system POWER ON
button is pressed, if the total voltage provided by the (4) D-cell batteries is greater
than 4.2 volts. Normal total voltage for the (4) batteries is 6 volts. If the battery
OK indicator fails to light when the POWER ON button is pressed, replace the
batteries.
3.5.6 Battery compartment covers are provided with O-ring seals and threaded
engagements. Use a coin or large flat-blade screwdriver and turn the covers
CCW to open. Battery polarity is: Positive [ + ] end faces UP for all cells.
3.5.7 The ANV-20/20 case lid is provided with an air pressure relief valve. Press the
relief valve button ( or turn the valve knob two turns CCW ) to open and equalize
air pressure inside the case before opening the cover.
For the screw-type relief valve only, close the valve by turning clockwise. Use
finger pressure only to close the valve. Keep the valve closed for shipping and
storage.

REVISION H 28 OCT 2014
3.3.1 The pattern shown in Figure 3-2 is projected at infinity focus from the ANV-20/20
viewing port. The entire pattern fills approximately one quarter of the NVD field of
view.
3.3.2 The numbers shown at the center of each bar pattern are the second part of the
standard Snellen resolution fraction. i.e.: The 25 pattern represents 20/25 on the
Snellen eye chart; the 40 pattern represents Snellen 20/40. Normal or perfect
vision is taken as 20/20 in the Snellen system. If the smallest pattern discernable
is 20/40 in the Snellen system, objects visible at 20 feet would be visible at 40 feet
by an observer with perfect vision.
3.3.3 For typical AN/AVS-6 goggles, the image tube has an equivalent Snellen
resolution of 20/35 and the goggle as a system has a resolution equivalent to
Snellen 20/40. This means that under high-light level conditions, a trained user
can resolve a Snellen 20/40 target using standard AN/AVS-6 goggles. See table
5-1 for the suggested minimum resolution limits.

3.3.4 Test pattern sizes are based on the objective lens focal length for AN/AVS-6 and
F4949 goggles, which is taken as 26.8mm. The ANV-20/20 reticle provides
resolution data as shown in Table 3-1.
3.3.5 The gray scale patterns around the edge of the reticle are used to check goggle
dynamic performance. See Figure 3-3. With the brightest step in the scale at the
top of the pattern and the darkest at the bottom, each progressive step around
the pattern ( CW or CCW ) is as bright as the previous step, except for step 8,
which is opaque. Corresponding pattern steps on the left and right sides have
equal brightness.
3.3.6 Table 3-2 gives the approximate night sky conditions for the 8-step gray scale
reference pattern. Low light-level values are obtained by pressing and holding the
LOW-LIGHT CHECK button. Note that total darkness is required for the low-
light levels to be meaningful and the user must allow 3 - 5 minutes to
become dark adapted. Performance at the low-light levels is a combined test of
both the NVD and the user’s eyes. The ambient light sensor check ( OK ) is
for the high-light level tests only, and does not verify exclusion of ambient light for
the low-light level resolution and gray scale checks.

mount allows you to look directly ahead into the viewing port without
tipping your head forward or backward.
B. If the ANV-20/20 viewing port height is more than 1 inch too high or more
than 2 inches too low, flip up the goggles and adjust the wall mount
setting, up or down, as necessary. Holding the test set by the top and
bottom bracket handles, tip the top handle forward keeping the bottom
centered between the rails. Reposition up or down to provide the desired
height and tip the top of the mount back so that both bracket pins engage
the rail slots. See Figure 5-1.
C. Turn OFF the room lights, or dim the lighting in the test set area.
D. Press and momentarily hold the ANV-20/20 Power ON button. While the
button is pressed, check that both green LED indicators are lighted. Press
Power ON button again, after 3 minutes, if more time is needed to adjust
the NVD.
E. Turn ON the NVD and look into the viewing port. During the following
adjustments, keep your head erect and keep the NVD roughly centered
horizontally and vertically in the viewing port. The NVD objective lenses
should be just inside the port, leaving enough room to adjust the lens focus
rings. The NVD should not touch or rest on the viewing port.

5.2 MECHANICAL GOGGLE ADJUSTMENTS
B. ADJUST NVD TILT so the optical axis of the binocular is aligned with your
visual axis, while looking straight ahead. Adjusting the TILT rotates the
assembly and a correction to the VERTICAL alignment may be required.
NOTE:
Improper adjustment of the IPD can cause loss of visual acuity,
unnecessary eye strain, and loss of depth perception.
D. Adjust the EYE RELIEF control knob for the furthest setting that will permit
full 40 field viewing. Rotate the NVD left and right to illuminate the edges
of the NVD field. Check that there is a sharp edge at each side of the field
of view. Reduce the eye relief distance if the field edges are not sharp,
after performing the focussing procedures in section 5.3.
A. With the ANV-20/20 and NVD power ON, turn the OBJECTIVE FOCUS
RING ( front lens ) for best image clarity.
B. Focus the EYEPIECE DIOPTER RING by turning CCW until the image is
sharp and keep turning until the image becomes slightly blurred. Stop for a
second, blink, and let the eye relax. Now slowly rotate the ring back CW
until the image just becomes sharp.
NOTE:
The eyepiece focusing procedure in section 5.3 A attempts to achieve
best image resolution with the least amount of (-) diopter correction
( closest to the zero diopter setting ).

CTM ANV-20/20
REVISION H 28 OCT 2014
NOTE
DO NOT rotate the eyepiece diopter ring CW beyond the setting
that just brings the image into sharp focus. If the eyepiece focus
is adjusted too far CW, the eye will initially adapt to the NVD
setting but will become fatigued over time. Loss of visual acuity,
depth perception, and eye strain will result.
C. FINE TUNE the OBJECTIVE FOCUS RING ( front lens ) for best image
clarity on the smallest Snellen number target with any visible structure.
Take your time, blink after each adjustment, and leave the lens set at the
point of best focus.
E. Repeat STEPS (A) through (D) for the other half of the NVD.
F. Check the NVD PERFORMANCE with each eye individually and then with
both eyes open per Table 5-1. Acuity should be at least as good with both
eyes as it is with the best side of the NVD. Resolution performance
difference between the left and right eyes should not exceed one step.

NOTE
Low-light performance checks require that room lights be turned OFF. Allow
several minutes for your eyes to become accustomed to a dark environment. The
ambient light shield may not provide sufficient shielding from bright room lighting.
To properly perform the Low-light check, the targets should not be easily visible
when the test set is OFF. If in doubt, wait until the 3-minute self-timer turns the
ANV-20/20 OFF.
NOTE
During flight, minor adjustments to vertical height, tilt, and horizontal alignment
may be required, due to helmet settling and rotation. DO NOT CHANGE THE
EYEPIECE DIOPTER SETTINGS DURING FLIGHT. The setting obtained using
the optical alignment station should produce the best setting for long term use.
NOTE
The objective lens focus settings obtained using the ANV-20/20 optical alignment
system are correct for NVD infinity focus. If it becomes necessary to refocus the
NVD objective lenses, pick a clearly defined object at least 150 feet away.
Choose objects with clearly defined straight lines if possible. Avoid lights that are
bright enough to cause blooming of the NVD image.

6.0 COMMON NVD MALFUNCTIONS
A. SHADING - Appears as a dark area along the EDGE of the image field. Typical
problems with shading start at a point at the edge of the image and grow into a
crescent. Look at a dimly lighted blank wall so that the entire field of view of the
NVD is illuminated. If shading is present, the image field is no longer circular,
and changing the tilt or IPD adjustments does not correct the problem. Turn the
NVD in for maintenance.
B. EDGE GLOW * - Appears as a bright area along the outer edge of the image.
Check for this problem using the LOW-LIGHT CHECK mode in the ANV-20/20.
Make sure room lights are OFF to perform this check. Stray light entering the
ANV-20/20 viewing port can cause bright areas in the test field. If the glow is
present and is brighter than the Low-light resolution pattern, turn the NVD in for
maintenance.
NOTE
Some NVD malfunctions are cause for grounding only when they become
extreme. If the image quality is distracting to you, notify your goggle maintainers
and get another set of goggles. Evaluate the severity of other malfunctions in
accordance with the following guidelines.
31
CTM ANV-20/20
REVISION H 28 OCT 2014
Distortion may appear as a bending of straight lines over the entire image (
geometric or S distortion ) or as localized rotations or cuts in the image (
shear distortion ). Distortion is most evident when viewing a target with straight
lines while slowly moving the NVD up and down or from side to side. If distortion
is present at an objectionable level, turn the NVD in for maintenance.
H. DARK SPOTS - Appear as stationary dark spots that are usually well-focused.
Most NVDs have some small dark spot defects. Do not fly with NVDS having
large central dark areas or spots. To verify dark spot presence, view a dim,
uniformly-illuminated blank wall. Turn the NVD in for maintenance if dark spots
are present near the center of the image or if there are any large dark spots
present.
NOTE
If you are uncertain about the operational fitness of a pair of NVDs, have
them checked by your goggle maintainers.

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
WALL MOUNT: OPTION ANV-20/20-003
A-1.2 The wall mount positions the ANV-20/20 alignment reference so that the
viewing port can be can be lined-up with the NVG while looking straight ahead.
Vertical adjustment using the mount is provided in 2-inch increments. Spring clips
at the top and bottom of the carrier hold the test set in position. Place the test set
face down and slide the carrier into position; then lock the retaining clips.
33
CTM ANV-20/20
REVISION H 28 OCT 2014
A-2.3 Several fastening methods are possible to secure the wall mounting
bracket, depending on the type of wall construction. For drywall and 2x4 stud
construction, drywall screws or steel wood screws may be used if the studs are
located in the right places. If the stud locations are not favorable, use toggle
bolts with either #10 or ¼ x20 screws. For #10 toggle bolts, use at least –6-
bolts to secure the mount. Four or more toggle bolts are acceptable if ¼ x20
toggle bolts are used. Use washers behind the screw heads for all types of
screws in this class.
Caution:
If plastic-insert drywall fasteners are used, select large screw types and mount
using all nine holes. Use flat washers behind the screw heads. If fewer than
nine fasteners of this type are used, movement of the ANV-20/20 in the wall
mount will eventually cause the upper screws to pull out.
A-2.4 For brick, cement block, and concrete walls, lag bolts and shields are
recommended. Use ¼ inch bolts at least 1 ½ inches long. Use washers behind
the lag bolt heads. Drill holes for the upper mounting points first and make sure
the mount is level, then mark and drill for the lower holes. Use at least four ¼
inch or larger lag bolts.

A-2.5 Where room ambient light cannot be easily controlled, it is suggested that
an alignment station ( closet ) be constructed which will allow easy access to the
ANV-20/20 but will shield bright room lights from the goggles and test set viewing
port.
A-2.6 As shown in figure A-4, several layouts for the alignment station are
possible. Door or curtain closures will permit construction of a smaller unit, while
an alcove design will accomplish the same task without having to open and close
a door.
A-2.7 Figure A-5 shows a suggested side view of the alignment station. The
light fixture above the test set wall mount provides illumination while adjusting the
test set height and checking goggle mounts. The baffle shown running the width
of the alignment station prevents direct illumination of the goggle. A dimming
type light switch is suggested. Light fixture wattage is chosen to provide
adequate illumination while adjusting the test set height to the desired position.
