Introduction

Fonterra is a cooperation of New Zealand farmers[ CITATION Abo18 \l 1033 ]. It is the leader
of dairy products. The headquarters of the company is in Auckland. A large number of
subsidiaries of this farm are operating across the world. All types of dairy foods, such as milk,
cheese, butter, ice cream and all related by-products are offered by Fonterra Group.

Raukawa iwi, also known as the Raukawa Settlement Trust (RST) is a company based on South
Waikato[ CITATION Abo181 \l 1033 ]. The iwi organization was initially started in 1987,
however, the modern RST started in the year 2009.

Parininihi ki Waitotara (PKW) is an agri-business farm. It is a Maori organization based in

Taranaki, Aotearoa. This company deals in commercial properties, farming and forestry
interests. It is the largest dairy farm of Taranaki[ CITATION Par18 \l 1033 ].

In late 1840, a bi-cultural agreement (Treaty of Waitangi) was signed between the Maori and
British immigrants. However, after this agreement, the British became dominant and the Maori
tribes were outnumbered. Pakeha- Maori was the first bi-cultural people. In 1980, the treaty was
declared as the founding document of New Zealand. In this project, the study is based on the bi-
cultural partnership between these companies (as mentioned in the Treaty of Waitangi). In
addition, all the activities that indicate the relationship between these companies will be focused
and understood.

Findings/ Analysis

Involvement of Fonterra with Raukawa iwi

Fonterra is the largest employer in New Zealand. A large number of regional groups and
businesses are associated with it. The Fonterra has followed the treaty (bi-cultural agreement)
and provided employment to a huge number of workers across the country. As a large
organization, Fonterra always needs more workers. To increase cultural bonding, always
cooperate with local groups and small regional foundations. The CEO of Fonterra Group limited,
Anna Haira is appointed as In-charge of Maori relations and Agribusiness to increase the Maori
involvement [ CITATION Fon18 \l 1033 ].
Fonterra's goal is not only limited to increase business, but it wants to become an active partner
in Maori advancement across the globe. As an initiative to achieve this goal, Fonterra
collaborated with Raukawa iwi and employed some of their workers. Three electrical and
mechanical interns were recruited in the year 2014. Most of these initiatives were taken at the
Lichfield site, which is situated near Tokoroa.

The Maori trainees had learned a lot during the training program and they showed good
potential. These confidence level and professionalism of these interns were improved very much
and they were set ready to deal with complex situations in the modern competitive world. Later
they were sent back to Raukawa Settlement Trust (RST) to work with the Maori origin company.
Mrs. Ngawhika, Business Development and Relationship Manager of Fonterra Limited said that
the responsibility these young people assigned was not very easy, however, they have done it
remarkably well[CITATION Rau18 \l 1033 ].

In a similar way, the Raukawa group also returned the favor. The group supported Lichfield site
and helped Fonterra group to install new types of machinery in that site and also helped to
improve nearby services. Second largest plant for cheese processing was established in Lichfield
site with the help of Maori group. The Raukawa Settlement Trust is a charitable trust which is
helping the Maori population. After the active involvement and motivational efforts of Fonterra,
now RST foundation started a larger campaign with Mercury group for Maori advancement
where they are providing the scholarship for eligible young people of Maori tribe. The
scholarship is offered to study in the University of Waikato[CITATION The181 \l 1033 ].

Involvement of Fonterra with Parininihi ki Waitotara

In the year 2006, Parininihi ki Waitotara (PKW) was awarded Ahuwhenua Trophy. This trophy
is given to those Maori individuals or groups who show remarkable contribution in Dairy
farming. PKW is the largest productive farm of Taranaki. It is also a Maori (iwi) organization,
which is greatly supported by the Fonterra Cooperation Limited. The company has a huge
amount of land of twenty thousand hectares for their operation purpose. These lands are used for
varieties of business operations such as farming, commercial property, horticulture of crayfish,
and forestry. PKW has a sustainable business relationship with Fonterra[CITATION Vis18 \l
1033 ].
The Whareroa site of Fonterra lies in the center of Taranaki. It provides more than fourteen
million liters of milk per day. PKW farm is the largest producer of Dairy products; it is one of its
kinds. No other factory in the world is capable of such as huge amount production of dairy
ingredients. All the products processed together can even fill up more than three swimming pools
used in Olympic. Fonterra Whareroa plant was founded in the year 1972.

Fourteen firms and three dry stock farms are supporting the dairy production of Parininihi ki
Waitotara. It is the largest supplier of milk to Fonterra. As a dealer-supplier scenario, the
business relationship with Fonterra is very strong. The relationship among top management is
very positive. These two companies truly follow the bi-cultural relationship among them. The
Pakeha and Maori tradition fully collaborates with each other in both companies. This kind of
positive relationship helped these companies to develop their business sustainability. The
workers and managers are foreigners or Maori or Pakeha (British). Various efforts and activities
are being done in order to keep this healthy relationship. Many kinds of events such as
conferences, presentation, and cultural or traditional programs are organized to enlighten the
Maori contributions towards the growth of New Zealand. These programs are organized on sites
of Fonterra or on the properties of PKW or on any neutral surroundings. All the employees
properly follow the behavioral ethics and do their responsibilities respectfully.

In addition, to maintain this extraordinary business relation, these two companies had arranged
many meetings and conferences to exchange various ideas (social, personal or traditional). Also,
there has been some diary related training programs and other business meetings. Employees
from both companies have actively participated in these events. Further, students and
entrepreneurs also have taken part in these kind programs. If these kinds of steps taken regularly,
more Young talents will get opportunities and they can play significant roles in the growth of the
economy.

Conclusion

The project is showing various factors, which is encouraging the business relationships among
Fonterra, PKW and Raukawa group. The bi-cultural agreement (Treaty of Waitangi) plays a vital
role in their strong relationship. Although the officials are from Pakeha, Maori tribe, and other
communities, they share a common goal towards business growth. The mutual understanding
among them is very strong and each one them respect others traditions, languages, and other
cultural ethics. These strategies helped these organizations to grow their business and
sustainability level. The Treaty of Waitangi has played as a pillar toward the growth of New
Zealand economy.

After studying this project, it is recommended to respect individual culture as well as others
culture to maintain a good social and business relationship. This kind of strategy can help the
growth of business drastically. For sustainable growth, the exchange of ideas and initiatives are
much appreciable. By implementing these actions one can correct their mistakes, also they can
choose the best ideas from a list of exchanged ideas. These can benefit all the organizations if
they meet in a business meeting.
