One important skill in critical reading is summarizing. Now, what is
summarizing? Well first, summarizing is used to determine the essential ideas in an article, book, and other texts. It helps the reader to get the central idea or the gist, usefull information, words, or phrases that would lead him to meet his reading purpose. Moreover, it teaches the reader on how to take a large selection of text and reduce or codense it to the main points for more concise understanding. Second, summarizing is usually done after reading the whole text but others do it while they are reading. Of course it would be difficult to summarize a text if you as a reader have not yet fully understand the message that the text or the author wants to convey. Before you will summarize the selection that you have read, you must first assure that you have deeply comprehend its message and central idea. And lastly, summarizing develop some of our critical reading skills such as deepening our understanding about the text, identifying more relevant ideas, combining details that would support the main idea, focusing on the gist presented in the text, and condesing the text into its more clear and concise form.
