WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM MHRA EVALUATION REPORTS
The Device Evaluation Service (DES) aims to provide independent and
objective evaluations of medical devices available on the UK market.
Specialist centres, mainly in NHS Trusts, do the evaluations under long-term
contract to, and in accordance with protocols approved by, the MHRA. The
evaluations are usually of a unit supplied by the manufacturer. We would
expect this unit to be representative of the product on the market but cannot
guarantee this. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with
respect to any modifications that might be made to the product type after
MHRA’s evaluation. The reports are intended to supplement, not replace,
information already available to prospective purchasers.

Comparative Specifications of
General Radiography Systems
MHRA and the Device Evaluation Service

Policy statement
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Device
Evaluation Service provides evaluation of medical devices available within the UK.
This report contains the summaries of evaluations that represent the quantitative and
qualitative data obtained from one or more X-ray systems during a type test. The
manufacturers have been asked to ensure their devices are operating within
specification and therefore the results should be representative of any identical models
of this device. Evaluation data in the report does not take account of any
modifications to the device since the evaluation. Where data on other similar devices
have been included for comparative purposes, the data will usually be identical to
those originally published; any exceptions will be highlighted.

The MHRA Device Evaluation Service does not have access to any information held
by the Agency in its capacity as the Competent Authority for the UK, apart from any
information already in the public domain. The reports will contain data given by the
manufacturer on the regulatory status of their devices but apart from this, they are not
an indicator of the regulatory status of a product. Occasionally, the Device
Evaluation Service refers products to the regulatory arm of the MHRA for
consideration of breaches of the legislation governing medical devices. The Device
Evaluation Service plays no further part in any regulatory investigation that ensues
and does not have advance notification of any regulatory action that may follow.

KCARE report: Comparative specifications of general radiography systems

KCARE

King’s Centre for the Assessment of Radiological Equipment (KCARE) is an

independent evaluation centre funded by the MHRA. It provides both user and
technical evaluation information on diagnostic X-ray imaging equipment to the
MHRA, Department of Health (DH), National Health Service (NHS) Trusts and the
NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP).

The British Standards Institute has accredited KCARE to the ISO 9001: 2000 Quality
Standard. All KCARE tests are conducted with reference to national and international
standards for the safety and performance of medical equipment.
KCARE organises a number of user groups to discuss matters including the
evaluation programme in general and features specifically relating to each evaluation.
KCARE welcomes comments and suggestions on the evaluation programme and the
presentation of reports.

KCARE maintains a report library and database of radiological equipment available

in the UK. Equipment portfolios containing the full results of each product
evaluation, data, UK supplier and manufacturer information, are also maintained.

KCARE report: Comparative specifications of general radiography systems 3

Introduction

This report is one of a series of comparative specifications documents produced by

KCARE for a range of diagnostic imaging equipment. These reports are designed to
assist prospective purchasers in the selection of equipment appropriate to their
requirements.

This report includes general radiography systems currently available in the UK and
will be updated as systems undergo any major changes or when new systems are
introduced to the market.

The information included in this document is taken from the suppliers’ or

manufacturers’ product data or was provided by the suppliers in response to a
selection of questions based on the SafeSpecs software package. SafeSpecs is a tool
designed to assist purchasers in the preparation of tender documents and is hosted on
the KCARE website. Please contact KCARE for a SafeSpecs password.

Suppliers are given the opportunity to check and comment on the report prior to
publication. The information provided has not been independently verified by
KCARE.

General radiographic examinations constitute a high percentage of an imaging

department’s workload, with many systems being in use 24 hours a day. A general
radiography system should be robust and manoeuvrable in order to undertake the wide
range of examinations required. The design of the system should incorporate
ergonomic considerations, feature a wide range of movements and have reproducible
performance. The ability to upgrade the system to direct digital imaging should also
be considered.

General radiography systems are comprised of several major components and the
purchaser selects the most suitable configuration for their requirements.

The main components of the standard configuration are:

• table
• X-ray tube (ceiling supported or floor mounted) and generator
• tomographic facility
• vertical bucky.

An alternative configuration is a Universal system. The X-ray tube and image

receptor are mounted on a U or S shaped support, allowing the tube and receptor to be
moved into different orientations for a range of radiographic examinations. These
units may be supplied with a dedicated trolley or a conventional X-ray table.

This report contains data for the highest specifications of complete new systems
available, with details of other configurations available included. Suppliers may offer
alternative tables, generators, or tubes depending on the requirements of the
department.

Introduction

If the supplier has not provided the requested information, ‘Information not supplied’
is shown.

Future developments

Medical Imaging Systems is planning to launch the new range of Shimadzu

Radiotex system in 2004.

Philips Medical Systems plan to replace the Bucky Diagnost TS (floor mounted X-
ray tube and X-ray table system), with a new floor stand, the Bucky FS in 2004.

Siemens Medical Solutions have expanded their product range into digital
radiography with the option to purchase or upgrade to the Multix M range.

Wolverson X-ray Limited plan to launch the Arcoma fully integrated direct digital
system in 2005.
