Æ C=AxB
• OR gate
Æ C = A+B
• NOT Gate
Æ B=A
• NOR Gate
Æ C=A⊕B
• XNOR Gate
AND: 1xx=x
0xx=0
OR: 1+x=1
0+x=x
NOT: x+x=1
xxx=0
XOR: x⊕y=y⊕x
– Example: f = x1 x x2 + x1 x x2
• Sum-of-product technique: 0 1 1 1
– Group all rows with an 1 0 0 0
output of f=1 into a single
AND term (product) 1 0 1 0
– Combine these AND terms 1 1 0 1
with a single OR gate (sum)
1 1 1 0
• Note: All truth tables can be
converted into gate form by
using this technique.

Sum-of-Products
• A minterm is a product term
x1
where each of the input x2
variables occurs exactly x3
once.
x1
– The sum-of-products technique x2
is also referred to as a x3
disjuction of minterms f
• Grouping together the x1
x2
minterms for all rows where x3
f=1 yields the following
x1
expression: x2
x3
f = x1x2x3 + x1x2x3 + x1x2x3 + x1x2x3
• Steps:
– Distributive: f = x1x3(x2 + x2) + x1x2x3 + x1x2x3 + x1x2x3
– Complement: f = x1x3x1 + x1x2x3 + x1x2x3 + x1x2x3
– Identity: f = x1x3 + x1x2x3 + x1x2x3 + x1x2x3
– Idempotent: f = x1x3 + x1x2x3 + x1x2x3 + (x1x2x3 + x1x2x3)
– Associative: f = x1x3 + (x1x2x3 + x1x2x3) + (x1x2x3 + x1x2x3)
– Distributive: f = x1x3 + x1x3 (x2 + x2) + x1x2 (x3 + x3)
– Complement: f = x1x3 + x1x3x1 + x1x2x1
– Identity: f = x1x3 + x1x3 + x1x2
