IB MYP Mathematics, Grade 9 / 10

Unit Title : Functions and Equations (Unit 1 and Unit 2)

Start Date / Duration : 26 August 2019 / 7 weeks
Global Context : Globalization and Sustainability
How is everything connected?
Students will explore the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the
relationship between local and global processes; how local experiences mediate the global; the
opportunities and tensions provided by world-interconnectedness; the impact of decision-making on
humankind and the environment.

Key Concepts:
Change, Connections, Relationships, Systems

Related Concepts:
Representation, Equivalence, Model, System

Inquiry Questions:
1. What is function? How do we analyze the domain and range?
2. What is linear equation? How do we sketch and analyze the graph of a linear
equation?
3. What is quadratic equation? How to solve it?
4. How do we sketch and analyze the graph of a quadratic equation?
5. What is the difference between equality and inequality?
6. How do we solve the system of inequalities graphically?
7. How do we find the minimum or maximum value from the given system of
inequalities?
8. How do we analyze and solve composite and inverse functions both analytically and
graphically?

In this units (unit 1 and unit 2), students will build their understanding in sketching and
analyzing the linear and quadratic graphs, including finding composite and inverse. Students
will use the knowledge to find the minimum or maximum value from the given system of
inequalities.

Formative tasks will include discussion, presentation, and homework.
