Three Genres Two Audiences Project Assignment Sheet

The purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to composing concepts and writing situations that
exist beyond the traditional academic essay.

You will start by considering a topic you’re interested in or passionate about. Topics could include global
warming, equal pay, paying college athletes, or improving food options across campus. The selection of
topics is wide and open to you, but you must “take a side,” or have an argument. This argument should
be focused. For example, you can take the topic of global warming, but make your argument focused
enough that you’re not tackling the entire topic, but you’re finding a way to argue your stance to
manageable audiences (e.g.: We should have more conservation efforts across campus,) so you create
genres that campaign for these efforts.

What is a genre?: A category of composition characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject

matter. Genre examples: pamphlets, billboards, speeches, Instagram posts, Facebook posts,
advertisements, music videos, flyers, news articles, magazine covers, videos that circulate on platforms,
Buzzfeed articles, websites, Tumblr pages, etc.

This project should have research elements embedded into the genres, but it’s not as heavily researched
as you might consider traditional research papers to be.

This project should have a minimum of 2 audiences. Think more deeply than audiences that either do or
don’t agree with you. Be more specific as to who you are speaking to. Are you addressing other college-
aged students? Are you speaking to members of congress? Who your audiences are will largely affect
how you construct your argument across your genres.

Rhetorical Rationale: In 500 words, you should rationalize the design and composing choices you made
in your project. How do you want your audience to engage with your genres? How do you want your
audience to respond? Explain your design. Explain why you chose the genres you did.
