Lesson 4

TRANSIT OF PLANETS
Transit means moving or travelling of planet (s). The effect of planets
moving through various signs / houses during a particular period is said to be
the effect of transit. When a planet moving in orbit during a particular
period passes over or aspects a planet in a particular house in birth
horoscope, a transit is said to have occurred. In Hindu astrology, it is always
considered from the Moon sign. For example, Moon is posited in 12 in the
horoscope No. 1. Hence, transit will be considered from sign 12, taking it as
Ascendant, shown as horoscope No. 2 :

No. 1 No. 2

In the above horoscope No. 1 , Moon is in sign 12 in

IVth house. In the horoscope shown in the right margin,
Moon is in sign 12 but in Xth house. In both the cases
transit effects will be considered from sign 12, taking it as
Ascendant.

This means the sign where Moon is posited in a horoscope is taken as Ascendant
for the purpose of studying transit effects. (However, now astrologers have started
considering the transit effects from Ascendant chart itself.)

Suppose, in a horoscope Moon is in sign 2 as shown in a

particular horoscope in the right margin.

3
Hence transit will be considered taking 2 as Ascendant as
shown in the right side.

So make a horoscope with sign 2 as Ascendant (as shown).

Now put the planets in the signs in the horoscope chart with
sign 2 as Ascendant, according to the period you wish to
consider. Suppose you want to consider the transit effects
of 10.11.1995 at 3.00 pm for this particular horoscope. Find
out the position of planets from a pachang and place the planets in the above charts
with Ascendant as 2. Alternatively you can have a transit chart from any
astrology software.

Similarly, we can make a transit chart for any period. Take the Moon sign as
Ascendant and place the planets according to the period you wish to consider, and
your transit chart is ready.

On 10.11.1995 at 3.00 pm the planets are posited in

the horoscope (with 2 as Ascendant) as shown in the
right margin above.

Now, we find that Saturn is in sign 11 in Xth house.

This means Saturn is transitting Xth house. Its effects
will be studied later on. Jupiter is at present
transitting VIIth house. The effects of Jupiter
transitting VII house will have to be studied in this
case. We hope this is sufficient to explain the meaning of transit.

One more thing, if by chance a planet is in the same sign in the birth horoscope
and transit chart, then it is said that that planet is transitting the natal planet. E.g.
if Moon is in sign 8 in a birth horoscope and again in sign 8 in the transit chart, it
is said that Moon is transitting natal Moon.

We know that horoscopes depict general details of life. Transit is used to time the
event. In the above example, Saturn is transitting Xth house, which is considered
bad. Saturn is good in III, VIth and XI houses. This can easily be found out when
Saturn will go to XIth house and good results predicted for that period.

What is a good transit and what is bad transit is explained in the following
paragraph.

4
Additionally, we should always try to balance the picture with Vimshottari Dasha.
Supposing Saturn reaches VIth house next year, when as per Vimshottari Dasha,
period of Lord of VIth or VIIIth would be running, which would give us a bad
period. Hence, good effects of transitting Saturn in VIth house may be neutralized
due to Period Lord of an evil house.

– Rules of Transit

12, 9, 5.

3. Vipreet Vedha

The concept of Vipareeta Vedha is an old one and is rarely used presently. A
planet gives malefic results in transit in certain houses from the birth Moon sign
and if some other planet(s) is in some specific houses from the natal Moon sign,
then the malefic results of the former planet are obstructed by the later planet.
This is termed as Vipareeta Vedha.

Following planets give bad results in the houses indicated against each :

Sun : IV, V, IX, XII

Moon : II, IV, V, VIII, IX, XII
Mars : V, IX, XII

9
Mercury : I, III, V, IX, XII
Jupiter : III, IV, VIII, X, XII
Venus : VI, VII, X
Saturn : V, IX, XII
Rahu : V, IX, XII
Ketu : V, IX, XII

The above is shown in a tabular form. Grey houses shows Vipreet Vedha houses.
E.g. If Sun is bad in IV, any planet in X will mitigate the bad effects, and so on.

natal Moon.

Transiting Saturn’s bad effects in the 12th house from the natal Moon will be
neutralized if there is a planet other than the Sun transiting the 3rd house from
natal Moon.

Even if a planet transits a favorable sign, he does not do any good if he occupies
an inimical or debilitation sign or is associated with or aspected by an inimical
planet.

Even if planets occupy favorable Gochara positions, they do not contribute well
if they are afflicted by vedha. Similarly though the vedha sign may be unfavorable,
a planet situated there being counter afflicted by a planet occupying its vedha rashi
does no evil but offers only good.

It is to be always remembered that Transits concepts should not be used in

isolation; they should always be used as a complimentary system to the dashas.

Vipreet vedha for Rahu and ketu go as per the vipreet vedha of Saturn, which
has been mentioned above.

13
4. A planet while transitting a favourable house (I, IV, V, VII, IX, X) in its
exaltation, own or friendly sign, will generate good results, according to its
strength, whereas when in inimical or depression sign, it will not produce
good results.

5. A planet while transitting an unfavourable house (VI, VIII, XII) in its

exaltation, own, or friendly sign will generate only bad results according to
its strength, but when in its inimical or depression sign, it will produce
maximum evil results.

6. If the transitting planet is benefic in unfavourable house, it reduces the bad

results. If the transitting planet is benefic in favourable house, it enhances
good results.

7. If the transitting planet is malefic in favourable house, it reduces the good

results. If the transitting planet is malefic in unfavourable house, it will
produce maximum bad results.

8. During transit if a benefic planet aspects or associates the transitting benefic

planet, very good effects will be there.

9. During transit if a malefic planet aspects or associates the transitting malefic

planet, very bad effects will be there.

10. A retrograde benefic while transitting a favourable house will increase the
good results. A retrograde benefic planet while transitting an unfavourable
house, will produce minimum bad results.

11. A retrograde malefic while transitting a favourable house will neutralize the
good results. A retrograde malefic planet while transitting an unfavourable
house will increase the bad results.

12. A benefic planet while transitting a favourable house will generate

maximum good results in its own period as per Vimshottari Dasha. But a
benefic planet while transitting an unfavourable house during its period as
per Vimshottari Dasha will reduce the bad results.

13. A malefic planet while transitting a favourable house will reduce bad results
in its own period as per Vimshottari Dasha. But a malefic planet while
transitting an unfavourable house during its period as per Vimshottari
Dasha will increase the bad results.
14
14. A combust planet while transitting a favourable house will not produce
good / bad results, as the case may be.

15. If a planet while transitting a favourable house is hemmed between two

malefic, good results will not be felt. If a planet while transitting an
unfavourable house is hemmed between two malefics, maximum bad results
will be felt.

16. For minute examination of transit effects, the longitude of Moon is taken
into account. We know that Saturn is good in IIIrd house from Moon.
Hence, Saturn when reaches IIIrd house should be good. But it does not do
so. In actual practice, we find this good effect is delayed. Why? because
this good result will occur only when Saturn in IIIrd house reaches the
same longitude as that of natal Moon. Supposing longitude of Moon was
13°55' in IIIrd house. To calculate the time that Saturn will take to reach
13°55', use the following formula :

1° = 1 Month (as Saturn takes 30 months to travels 30E (1 sign)

Hence, 13° 55', say 14° = about 14 months. Hence, we find the result is
delayed by 14 months. The good effects of Saturn in IIIrd house will be 14
months after Saturn enters IIIrd house.

Formula for other planets :

For Sun, Mercury, Venus 1° = 1 day
For Jupiter 1° = 13 days
For Rahu 1° = 18 days

17. Some authorities also maintain that Sun & Mars give their maximum effects
when they enter a sign from 0E to 10E. Jupiter and Venus give their effects
when they are at 10E to 20E in a sign, Moon and Saturn in the last third of
sign, i.e. 20E to 30E. Mercury and Rahu are always same throughout the
sign.

18. It is also maintained by eminent professors that different planets give their
result of next sign in advance. Sun would give the result of next sign 5 days
in advance, Mon 72 minutes, Mars 8 days, Mer 2 days, Jup 45 days, Ven 4
days, Sat 6 months, and Rahu & Ketu 3 months in advance.

15
Generally speaking, like in interpreting birth horoscopes, balancing is always
done. If a benefic planet is in inimical sign, its good effect is reduced. If a
malefic planet is aspected by benefic planet, its bad results are reduced. Similarly,
in transit also, the balancing should always be done. That is, if the transitting
planet is benefic, and it is transitting unfavourable house, good and bad effects are
neutralised. If the transitting planet is malefic transitting unfavourable houses,
being aspected by malefic planets, bad effects will be enhanced.

Also, if a planet is strong and benefic in birth chart; in transit it is in exaltation,

own or friendly sign, and if its period is running, very good effects will be felt. It
is always to be remembered that wherever we have talked of good or bad effects,
these always pertain to the house(s) associated with the concerned planet(s) or the
things/articles represented by the concerned planet(s).

It may also be kept in mind that throughout the lessons we have used numbers, e.g.
1, 2, 6, 9 etc. representing signs, and Roman numbers, e.g. I, II, VI, IX, etc.
representing houses.
