MATCH-MAKING ANALYSIS
Horoscope Matching or Kundli matching is very deep and intensely rooted in
Hindu society. Before entering in to marriage relationship an astrologer is referred
to for his analysis of the horoscopes (match making) of boy and the girl. It is done
to ensure a harmonious, balanced and healthy marriage relationship. Matching of
horoscopes or marriage compatibility, is hence, even more basic than matching the
blood group. A medically mismatched couple risk their health & progeny, but an
astrologically mismatched couple put at stake, their health, wealth, happiness,
success, peace of mind, their future growth & prosperity - everything that makes
life worthwhile.
Our astrological shastras have gone into subject in detail and laid out a special
procedure called Guna Milan (8-Fold Test) for match-making. In addition,
Manglink Dosh is considered. (Both are being explained in detail later). These are
the two most common systems used for match-making. The Gun Milan System
takes into account basically the compatibility in the relationship on various basis,
whereas Manglik Dosh considers the position of Mars, which is considered a
malefic planet, in the horoscope. We have seen lot of times that in spite of
matching of the horoscope with maximum number of gunas, the marriage fails.
I. Gun-Milan System :

Let us take a sample case. Supposing Boy's star is Mrigsara, quarter / charan III,
Moon sign Gemini, and Girl's star is Vishakha, quarter / charan IV, Moon sign
Scorpio. From Compatibility Chart ( esykid pkVZ ) we find that for the star Mrigsara
(e`xljk) there are two columns, showing (ii) and (ii), which means first two quarters
of Mrigsara are in one column, and the next two quarters are in the next column.
Since ours is Mrigsara III, we take the next column. Vertically, for the star
Vishakha there are two rows, one showing (iii) and one (i), which shows that the
first 3 quarters are in the first row and the last quarter in the next row. Ours is the
Vishakha IV, we taken the next row. At the crossing point of this column and row,
we find that figure 11.5 and below this another figure 6 are written. This shows
that out of 36 gunas, 11.5 match, making it a mis-match and no. 6 is the dosha /
fault. Seeing the definition of dosha below the Compatibility Chart ( esykid pkVZ
), we find that it is for Nav Pancham dosha. This is explained in the end.
Let us now find out as to how this 11 gunas have arrived at. 36 gunas are assigned
to various ways in which matching is done. These are :
1. Kshatriya (Warrior)
2. Vaisya ( Businessman)
3 Shudra (Low class, scavengers, etc)
4. Bipra (Brahmin - pundit).

From time immemorial this classification of people has been made. Different
signs assigned to these are :
Kshatriya 1, 5, 9
Vaisya 2, 6, 10
Shudra 3, 7, 11
Bipra 4, 8, 12
Since the different type of nature (mentality) for each Varna is indicated, this kind
of matching shows agreement in the nature of two persons. In the order of status
/ rank, Bipra comes first, followed by Kshatriya, Vaisya and Shudra. In our sample
case, sign of boy is Gemini (3), making him Shudra and sign of girl is Scorpio,
making her Bipra. For finding out the no. of gunas for a particular match, refer to
the following table :

For our case, Boy is Shudra and Girl Brahman; hence, 0 gunas match.
From the above table, it is clear that if both are from the same Varna, match is
good and that Varna of boy should be higher than that of girl. If the boy is of
lower status than that of girl, it is considered a mis-match.

2 Vasya : means " to be under the influence of ". Following classification of
signs is done in this regard :
Use the following table to find out the no. of gunas for a particular match.
For our sample case, the boy is Gemini; hence Two-footed; Girl is Scorpio; hence,
Snake. This combination of boy (Two-footed) and girl (Snake) gives 0 gunas as
matching.
From the table, it is clear that if both are from same Varna, match is good.
3 Tara : Count from Star of boy to the Star of girl. Divide by 9, remainder
will be Tara of boy. Similarly, count from Star of girl to the Star of boy. Divide
by 9, remainder will be Tara of girl.
For our case, count from Star of boy, that is, Mrigsara, taking this as 1, to the Star
of girl, that is, Vishakha. It comes to 12. Divide by 9, the remainder is 3. This is
Tara of boy. Count from Star of girl, that is, Vishakha, taking this as 1, to the Star
of boy, that is, Mrigsara, It comes to 17. Divide by 9, the remainder is 8. This is

Tara of girl. Tara No. 3, 5, 7 are bad, remaining are good. If both the Tara of boy
and girl are good, it gives 3 points, if one good and one bad, it gives 1.5 points and
if both bad, it gives 0 points.
Based on the above, following table can be used to find out the gunas for this :

As stated above, Boy's Tara is 3 and that of Girl is 8. This combination gives us
1.5 gunas as per above table.
4. Yoni : This way of matching is done to find out the sexual compatibility of
the boy and girl. Following table shows the yoni as per birth star :

For our example, Boy' star : Mrigsara, Hence Yoni is Snake (No. 7), and Girl's Star
: Vishakha, hence Yoni is Tiger (No. 11). So this combination if 7 and 11 gives
you 2 Gunas.
The above quantification has been done on the basis of friendship and enmity
between deferent yonis. A special mention is made of enemy yonis, which are
given below :

Although the same Yonis are considered to be friends, yet there are some Yonis
which are enemies to each other, as under. Hence, these combinations should be
avoided :

Lion-Lion
Dog-Dog
Buffalo-Buffalo
Monkey-Monkey
5. Grah Maitri : means friendship between planets, i.e. Lords of signs of boy
and girl. This is also done to find out the temperamental compatibility between
the couple. This is done by matching the Lords of Signs (Moon) of Boy and Girl.
Lord of sign of boy should be friendly with the Lord of sign of girl. Natural
friendship between planets is given below :
If the Lords of Moon signs of boy and girl are enemies, there will be quarrels and
disputes between the married couple.

For our example, Boy's Sign : Gemini, its Lord is Mercury, and Girl's sign :
Scorpio, its Lord is Mars. According to above, Mer and Mar combination gets 1.5
gunas.

For our example, boy's star : Mrigsara; hence, Dev Gan, and girl's star : Vishakha;
hence, Rakshas Gan. Matching point is 0.
If both are of Dev Gan, love and affection will prevail between them; if of Dev and
Human Gan, some love will be there; if boy is of Human Gan and the Girl of
Rakshas Gan, death is possible; If boy is of Dev Gan and girl of Rakshas, they will
always be fighting.
7. Bhakut : If the signs of boy and girl are 6th and 8th to each other, it is said
that death of either takes place (known as Shadashtak). If the signs of boy and
girl are 5th and 9th to each other, it is said that there are problems from children
(Navam-Pancham). If the signs of boy and girl are 2nd and 12th to each other,
it is said that poverty is the fate of the couple (Dwi-Dwadash). All these
combinations come under Bhakut. Table in the next page quantifies the matching
points :
For our example case, boy's sign is Gemini (3) and girl's sign is Scorpio (8).
Matching these, we get 0 point.

8. Nadi : Classification of stars in this respect is as under :
For our example, boy's star : Mrigsara; hence, Madhya Nadi, and girl's star :
Vishakha; hence, Antya. Matching point is 8.
The result of Adi and Adi is always opposition to each other, the result of Madhya
and Madhya is death of wife after marriage, and the result of Antya and Antya is
the death of husband after marriage. These combinations have been given 0 points
above.
Thus, we get total of 11.5, as given below. This is the number given in
Compatibility Chart ( esykid pkVZ ), as stated in the beginning of this.

If you get between 0 - 16, it is a poor match; if between 17 - 23, a medium match;
if between 24 - 30, a good match; and if 31 - 36, an excellent match.
Faults / Dosh
Below the Compatibility Chart ( esykid pkVZ ) are given certain faults, which have
already been considered, but which should be given more attention. These are
numbered as under :
Panchang also tells that where the fault/dosh is completely cancelled, a + sign has
been given, and where there is a little dosh, a - sign is given. Also, if the star of
the girl is before the star of boy, a 0 has been given, since this is also sometimes
considered a dosh/fault.
However, a few more cancellation Yogas of Doshas are given below for your
ready reference :

c. The Lord of Moon Navansha of male is a natural friend of the Lord
of Moon Navansha of female.
a. If the Yonis of male and females are friends (For this refer to Yoni
: Asht Kut No. 4 )

b. The Lord of Moon sign of male is a natural friend of the Lord of
Moon sign of female,
a. There is no Bhakut
b. Moon Signs are same, but Stars (Nakshatras) are different. i.e. Moon
sign of male is same as the Moon sign of female, but the Star of Male
is different from the star of female.
a. Moon Signs are same, but Stars (Nakshatras) are different. i.e. Moon
sign of male is same as the Moon sign of female, but the Star of Male
is different from the star of female.
c. Stars(Nakshtras) are same, but the quarter of the Star is different. e.g.
Male is born in Ashwini, quarter II but female is born in Ashwini,
quarter IV.

This Dosh should not be deemed as cancelled even if :
a The Lord of Moon sign of male is a natural friend of the Lord of Moon sign
of female,
When Mars is posited in Ist, IVth, VIIth, VIIIth or XIIth house in a horoscope, its
native is said to be suffering from Manglik Dosh. A boy/girl suffering from
Manglik Dosh should marry a girl/boy who is also suffering from Manglik Dosh.
The extent of this Dosh has been unduly heightened. About 45% horoscopes are
Manglik, as can be seen from the fact that out of 12 houses, Mars posited in one
of the 5 houses makes the horoscope Manglik. This makes it still worse when we
find that many eminent pundits declare that this should also be examined from
Moon Horoscope as well Venus horoscope. Still, some of the astrologers maintain
that this should be considered a Manglik if Mars is in IInd house. The entire logic
of this Dosh is based on the fact that Mars being natural malefic is posited in a
house which has some concern with the marriage or marital aspects, e.g. Ist House,
nature of the native; IVth house for domestic peace; VIIth house for marriage
itself; VIIIth house for life of partner; XIIth House for sexual pleasures; and the
last IInd house for family. But we know that there are other malefics also, like
Saturn, Sun or Rahu. Their placement in these house will also cause as much
trouble. Even if there is no Manglik Dosh, and Saturn and Rahu are posited in
VII, with the affliction of Venus, there will be much trouble to the marriage or
marital aspects.
There are as many as exceptions as the dosh/fault itself. In our view, as we have
been reiterating it again and again, in astrology, no prediction should be made on
one single factor; in this case by placement of Mars only. Maybe, there is Manglik
Dosh, but maybe there are many good combinations for marital life present in the
horoscope. Hence, before predicting, the horoscope should be considered in
totality. It is a possibility, the other combinations may neutralize the evil effects
of Mars as if there were no Manglik Dosh. In such a case, it is said that Manglik
Dosh has been cancelled. Some such combinations are being given below:

Exceptions :
1. If in the other horoscope, Saturn is posited in I, IV, VII, VIII or XII houses.
2. Strong Jupiter-Ven are posited in Asc or VII
3. If in the girl's horoscope, where Mars is posited, there is any other strong
malefic planet in the boy's horoscope, (and vice-versa also)
4. Retrograde, Debilitated, Combust Mars or Mars in enemy sign in I, IV, VII,
VIII, XII houses
5. If lords of signs of boy and girl are friends, if they are of same Gan, and/or
matching points are more than 30
6. If in the boy's horoscope Mars is in VI, Rahu in VII and Saturn in VIII, then
there is no effect of Manglik dosh for the Manglik girl
7. If both the horoscopes suffer from Manglik dosha
8. Mars of Aries in Asc, Mars of Scorpio in IV, Mars of Capricorn in VII,
Mars of Cancer in VIII or Mars of Sagittarius in XII
9. Placement of :
i. Moon-Venus in II house
ii. Jupiter fully aspecting or conjunct Mars
iii. Rahu in Angular houses (I, IV, VII, X)
iv. Mars is conjunct Rahu anywhere in the horoscope
10. If Mars in VIII but in the sign of Jupiter
11. Moon or Moon+Mars in Angular houses
12. Benefics in Angular and Trine houses and malefics in III, VI, VIII and XI
houses.
13. If Asc is Leo or Aquarius
14. If Taurus be Asc, Mars in XIIth house
15. If Gemini be Asc, Mars in II,VIII or XIIth houses
16 If Scorpio be Asc, Mars In II, VIII or XIth houses and so on and so on.
17. If Ruchak Mahapurush Yog is there in the horoscope.
