Nursing Standards are the minimal requirements professionally that is used by ten nurses to
define the expectations required for them as per a nursing governing body or board. The standard
can be sought from universal guidelines on Nursing and applies to Nurses of all fields and the
practice standards are variable and changeable due to different variations.
Process nursing standards development
The process of development of the nursing standards is as below.
Assessment: it involves the collection of information on a patient historical health.
Diagnoses: it’s the analysis of the information from the data on the patients so as to know the
kind of diagnoses to carry out.
Outcome identification: entails the identification of the outcomes to expect based on the care
plan for the patient.
Planning: nurse comes up with a plan indicating the authorized strategies and the procedure of
getting the outcomes.
Implementation: come to put into action the best plan the nurse identifies.
Coordination and consultation: in this, the nurse is mandated to coordinate care to be delivered to
the patient as well as to provide consultation services for the effective control the plan in action.
The authority and power for prescription: applied by the nurse for the provision of the treatment
procedure that needs to be followed as stated in the laws of the state and federal government
regulation.
Evaluation: done for the purpose of making the necessary follow-ups to see the fulfillment of the
desired outcomes.
Entities involved
In Florida, nursing standards are formulated by the Florida Board of Nursing under the direction
and guidance of the laid down rules and regulations by the American Nurses Association (ANA).
The state government of Florida through the department of health also participates in the process
of developing the standards of practice for the nurses in Florida. The development of the
standards of practice has also to consider the essential entities such as role validation,
knowledge, skills and competence, ethics, and the environment which guide to the formulation of
the best functional standards of practice (Harper, & Maloney, 2016).
Standards of practice influence
The operations and roles of medical-surgical nurse can be subjected to various changes thus the
nurses should work under the guidance of standards of practice for the achievement of the goal
intended in surgical nursing (Lewis, 2016). The standards of practice are used for the purpose of
guiding the nurse’s skills, professional knowledge and judgment as required in safe nursing
practice.
