Previously, life at home was very different than now. Our grandmothers tell us
how they carried out the activities in the house.
They used to live in the countryside. The houses to be made of “adobe” (adobe is a
mass made of straw and clay that is moldable), these houses used to be spacious,
the kitchen used to be big and is used to have a coal stove, they had to collect
firewood in the wood to light the stove, the house used to have a garden in the
center with flowers and decorations, also it used to have big bedrooms around the
garden because the families used to be big with many children, the bedrooms used
to be simple with beds and bedside tables. The floor used to be of cement and it
used to sweep with brooms of branches, the bathroom used to be rustic because the
shower was made of “Guadua” (Guadua is a plant similar to the bamboo, thorny
and full of water, it is very high and wide) and the water used to be could, it didn´t
used to have electrical shower with hot water to bathe.
They used to raise the animals for food as chickens, cows or cheeps, also they used
to cultivate in an orchard legumes and ortalizes, they watched the orchard taking
out water from the wells or ralls, it was away from the house and they to walk long
distances to get the water of what was harvested was used to be sold in the market
on Thursday. They used to walk a lot to go from one to town another, there didn´t
used to have many means of transportation like buses or cars, the tows used to be
remote from each other’s.
Women used to be responsible for their brothers and sisters, they used to study
until third grade, they used to be responsible for the house work, they had to obey
their husbands and if they didn´t they were mistreated, ignored or hit. Men used to
think that women had to serve them and do what they said. They used to wear hat,
long skirts with decorations, “alpargatas” (canvas shoes, with soles of rubber,
which is attached to the foot with tapes that are attached to the ankle) “ruana” (type
of poncho, made of wool, which covers from the shoulders to below the waist) and
blouses, they used to comb with two plaits. The women didn´t used to comb with
two plaits. The women didn´t used to go out, they used to stay at home doing
household chores and taking care of children.
At that time the people used to be more dedicated to their work, they were
generous and respectful, there used to be more tranquility and security then now.
