Lesson Idea Name: Georgia Geography

Content Area: Social Studies
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed: SS2G1 Locate and compare major topographical features of Georgia and
describe how these features define Georgia’s surface.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1 Empowered Learner & 2 Digital Citizen

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): kahoot.it
https://create.kahoot.it/share/georgia-geography/b011202a-5187-4a2f-a09d-066c103a0071

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☐ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The SRT activity will occur after a few days of going over the Georgia geographical regions. I will use a
PowerPoint (or a similar presentation software) to teach the material and ask them questions as we go. One
day once I feel like most kids have a grasp of it, I will introduce Kahoot and help them login on a school
computer or school tablet in teams, since most of them likely will not have a phone.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

I will show them the question on the Kahoot, and the students will discuss among their teams what the
correct answer might be before choosing as a group. After each question, results will pop up. If everyone got
it correct, I will compliment them. If not, I will briefly discuss the right answer. The materials needed are a
computer or tablet, and the activity will take as long as it takes for the students to answer all of the questions
(maximum of 20 seconds per question) and for me to discuss the answers with them.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
Please look at Kahoot link above to see the sample of questions.

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I will be looking to see what they know and what they do not in order to know what to go back over. I also
want to be able to explain it to them if they are unsure about the answers.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the activity, I will give the students a formative grade for participating. Then, I will assign a small project
based around whichever areas they had the most trouble with to get the students engaged in a topic they
need to know.

How will the data be used?

The data will not be used for a grade, only their participation will count towards their grade for this activity.
The data will only be used in order for me to see what I need to go back over and what they need to work on.
Since they completed it in teams, the lesson I create from this data will be aimed at the whole class, not just
some students, and there will be no clear way to give feedback to students or parents individually outside of
the automatic responses they receive in class during the activity.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I hope to help students be more engaged in the lesson while I gain knowledge about what topics they need to
review and practice. Then, I can think about how to do better in teaching and helping them learn better next
time.

Reflective Practice:
The activities I created for this lesson could impact student learning because they will be able to discuss the
topic with their friends and compete for who has the most correct answers. This would help them be more
engaged and practice the memorization of knowledge on this topic. It will impact their future learning
because I will use it to do better and plan for future instruction.
