Instructional Methods and Models

Have you ever sat in a classroom listening, to an instructor lecture for countless minutes

and still you walk away not knowing or having a clue what the lessons was about? You may

have felt like a failure because you just didn’t get. Well, maybe the instructor forgot to include

your learning style in the lesson. Today, instructors must realize students learn in many different

ways. When designing lessons, they have to use different strategies and methods that will reach

every student that enters their door. Gaming Principles, the ADDIE Model, Behaviorism and

Constructivism are a few examples that could help eliminate student failure and disengagement

in the classroom.

Gaming Principles

The gaming principles video provides information about how good video games and how

good commercials create a very effective learning environment and comfort for the learner; as

well as, how gaming assessment teach people to solve problems and become great learners.

This video could be used to inform learners as well as instructors about the importance of

having or utilizing teaching methods that influence creative learning, in particular "gaming."

This video also discusses principles that would contribute to defining a cohesive instructional

design plan that will identify how gaming potentially catches the interest of the learner.

The principles highlighted in this video can contribute to instructional design that is

meant to empower the learning process of the student, focus on problem-based learning and

creating deep understanding. In other words, the learner should feel like good learning took place

and understand that what they are doing really matters.

ADDIE Model

During the ADDIE Model video it stated, that the instructional designer and instructor

will be able to create any kind of instruction in any field. The ADDIE Model includes five

phases, analysis design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The Addie model can be

used to create all types of instruction. During the analysis phase, the objectives and goals are

obtained. The learner skills and previous knowledge are also obtained. A great way to find out

about the learner’s knowledge, is by testing them.  You have to consider the audience, so you

will have to identify the learner’s characteristics. The design phase is the learning assessment,

content, and developing strategies. Strategies are put in according to behavior outcomes. In the

design phase you can create a storyboard. Development phase is where the developer put the

content together and then it is reviewed and there might be feedback it is given. The

Implementation phase is where the training begins for the learner’s and the instructor. Learners

are trained on different tools and software, and the manager of the project will disburse, the

books or any handouts that are needed. The final stage is the evaluation, it consists of test items

and the feedback of the learners.

The information in this video will be very helpful to the instructional designer and

instructor. The ADDIE model is one of the best models to use. It is used by the majority of

instructional designers. The ADDIE model is very productive, and you can save money and time

by using this model. When you use the ADDIE model there will be less failures, because it is

reliable.

Behaviorism and Constructivism

The video on Behaviorism and Constructivism provided information on what each theory

is and also provide examples of what each theory should look like in a classroom setting.

Behaviorism theory on the video compared students to a black box. Students are empty and learn

information through repetition and reinforcement. Learners will need lots of practice to be

successful at what they are doing and learning. The constructivism theory in the video stated that

students build their knowledge by doing. Instructors should guide problem solving and allow

student to solve the problems themselves.

Implementing the behaviorism theory in an instructional design plan would allow

students to repeat task for a specific objective, provided with positive feedback and

reinforcement until the objective is mastered. Implementing constructivism theory in an

instructional design plan would allow students to master objectives and goals by doing

(experimenting) and learning as they do activities aligned with the objectives.

Conclusion

In closing, the Gaming Principle, ADDIE Model, Behaviorism and Constructivism

Theories should always be considered in the development of instructional designing. These

methods and models provide students with great success in the classroom.
