DIFFERENT TYPES OF TEAM SPORTS

BASKETBALL is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing
one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a
basketball (approximately 9.4 inches (24 cm) in diameter) through the defender's hoop (a
basket 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter mounted 10 feet (3.048 m) high to a backboard at each
end of the court) while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. A
field goal is worth two points, unless made from behind the three-point line, when it is worth
three. After a foul, timed play stops and the player fouled or designated to shoot a technical
foul is given one or more one-point free throws. The team with the most points at the end of
the game wins, but if regulation play expires with the score tied, an additional period of play
(overtime) is mandated.

VOLLEYBALL is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each
team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules.
[1] It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964.

BASEBALL is a bat-and-ball game played between two opposing teams who take turns batting
and fielding. The game proceeds when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws
a ball which a player on the batting team tries to hit with a bat. The objective of the offensive
team (batting team) is to hit the ball into the field of play, allowing its players to run the bases,
having them advance counter-clockwise around four bases to score what are called "runs". The
objective of the defensive team (fielding team) is to prevent batters from becoming runners,
and to prevent runners' advance around the bases.[2] A run is scored when a runner legally
advances around the bases in order and touches home plate (the place where the player
started as a batter). The team that scores the most runs by the end of the game is the winner.
FOOTBALL is a family of team sports that involve, to varying degrees, kicking a ball to score a
goal. Unqualified, the word football normally means the form of football that is the most
popular where the word is used. Sports commonly called football include association football
(known as soccer in some countries); gridiron football (specifically American football or
Canadian football); Australian rules football; rugby football (either rugby league or rugby
union); and Gaelic football. These various forms of football are known as football codes.

ICE HOCKEY is a contact team sport played on ice, usually in a rink, in which two teams of
skaters use their sticks to shoot a vulcanized rubber puck into their opponent's net to score
goals. The sport is known to be fast-paced and physical, with teams usually fielding six players
at a time: one goaltender, and five players who skate the span of the ice trying to control the
puck and score goals against the opposing team.

CRICKET is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the
centre of which is a 20-metre (22-yard) pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two
bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at the
wicket with the bat, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this and dismiss each
player (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the
stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side catching the ball after it is hit by the bat,
but before it hits the ground. When ten players have been dismissed, the innings ends and the
teams swap roles. The game is adjudicated by two umpires, aided by a third umpire and match
referee in international matches. They communicate with two off-field scorers who record the
match's statistical information.

WATER POLO is a competitive team sport played in water between two teams. The game
consists of four quarters in which the two teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball
into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the
match. Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Excluding the goalkeeper,
players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. Water polo is typically played in an all-
deep pool so that players cannot touch the bottom.

LACROSSE is a team sport played with a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball. It is the oldest
organized sport in North America, with its origins in a tribal game played by the indigenous
peoples of the Eastern Woodlands and by various other indigenous peoples of North America.
The game was extensively modified reducing the violence by European colonizers to create its
current collegiate and professional form.

The History of TENNIS game was developed from a 12th century French handball game called
"Paume" (palm). In this game the ball was struck with the hand. After some time "Paume" game
produced handball "Jeu de Paume" (game of the palm) and there were used racquets. The
game was first created by European monks for entertainment roles during ceremonial
occasions. At first, the ball was hit with hands. Later, the leather glove came into existence. This
leather glove was replaced with an adaptive handle for effective hitting and serving of the ball.
That was a birth of tennis racquet.

TABLE TENNIS, also called (trademark) Ping-Pong, ball game similar in principle to lawn tennis
and played on a flat table divided into two equal courts by a net fixed across its width at the
middle. The object is to hit the ball so that it goes over the net and bounces on the opponent’s
half of the table in such a way that the opponent cannot reach it or return it correctly. The
lightweight hollow ball is propelled back and forth across the net by small rackets (bats, or
paddles) held by the players. The game is popular all over the world. In most countries it is very
highly organized as a competitive sport, especially in Europe and Asia, particularly in China and
Japan.
SEPAK TAKRAW is a sport which is played all throughout Southeast Asia. It is called sepak raga
in Malay, sipa in Filipino, cau may Iin Vietnamese, and ka-taw in Lao. The sport is also known as
kick volleyball. It is actually slightly different from volleyball. Sepak takraw uses a rattan ball,
and the players only use their feet, knee, chest, and head to touch the ball.

This sport dates back to the 15th century, it was believed to have been developed by the
Malacca Sultanate. The governing body for sepak takraw is the International Sepak Takraw
Federation. Two teams play with three members each, the teams are called regus. One player is
situated at the back and that player is called tekong.

Sepak takraw maybe played indoors or outdoors like at the beach. The tekong serves the ball.
Once the ball is served; the players are allowed to move freely. Using the hands is not
permitted, and each player can touch the ball only once before it is hit over the net. The ball
can be returned over the net using any part of the body except for the arm from the shoulder
to the point of the finger. Sepak tekraw usually consists of three sets, 21 points per set; the
team who wins two sets wins the game.

SOFTBALL began in 1887 when George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade,
invented "indoor baseball". By the spring of 1888, the game had spread outdoors. It was
originally called either mushball, kittenball or indoor baseball, but by the 1920s it had acquired
the name of softball. The sport became organised in the United States in 1933 with the
formation of the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA). The sport was originally played
by men and did not become popular with women until the formation of the ASA.

Softball has a variation of baseball, the game started with different elements from other sports
of which were boxing and boating. A boating club and a boxing glove were the key parts when
playing a game of Softball. Throughout time softball was once known as Indoor Baseball, kitten
ball, mush ball and pumpkin ball. The game then adopted the name Softball by the 1930s.
Softball then grew a reputation across the United States and as a result of its growth in
popularity it became a well-recognised sport across the world.

FUTSAL (also known as fútsal or footsal) is a variant of association football played on a hard
court, smaller than a football pitch, and mainly indoors. It has similarities to five-a-side football.

Futsal is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper.
Unlimited substitutions are permitted. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is
played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also
played with a smaller, harder, low-bounce ball. The surface, ball and rules together favour ball
control and passing in small spaces. The game's "emphasis is on improvisation, creativity and
technique".
