CONRETE POLES

Rocla is the pioneer in the manufacture of concrete poles

in South Africa. The past ten years has seen particularly
rapid growth in the use of concrete poles as timber and
steel poles lost their cost effectiveness and became
increasingly unacceptable environmentally. The Rocla
product range falls into two broad categories: cast
concrete poles which are cost effective for a wide range
of applications and are made in lengths up to 13m; spun
concrete poles which are manufactured in single lengths
up to 24m and in jointed lengths to make a pole of 40m
length.

Rocla spun and cast concrete poles have

many advantages because they are:
• Maintenance free
• Aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly
• Resistant to vandalism and theft because they have:
1. No scrap or resale value
2. No value as wood or building struts for houses
• Resistant to fire
• Resistant to termites
• Standard in dimensions
• Made to client’s specifications with preformed holes
• No drilling necessary. Assembly of fittings is easy
• Amenable to being stored and stockpiled even in
remote areas, because:
1. Weight of poles discourages theft
2. Poles will not corrode or rot
3. Rectangular profile is easy to stack

In addition Rocla spun poles are:

• Exceptionally smooth and durable. Routine
maintenance inspections are not necessary.
No protective coatings are required
• Capable of an extra long service life from the high
density spun concrete and the precision steel
reinforcing cage
• Non-absorbent. Traffic and any other markings can be
painted on without the need for special primers
• Constant in taper and dimension. Handling and
installation equipment can be standardised

Spigot if required range of heights, load capabilities and fitting require-
ments. The elegant appearance of the poles with its
smooth light grey finish and continuous taper, makes it
very attractive for street lighting.

Rocla’s spun poles for street lighting are manufactured

from high quality durable reinforced concrete in a
standard range of lengths from 4,5m to 13.0m. The
unique centrifugal process creates a uniformly dense
strength concrete with smooth, impervious, finish. The
standard lighting pole is made to the strength specifica-
tion in SABS 470. Other strengths and lengths can be
designed and manufactured to suit customer require-
ments. All Rocla street lighting poles conform to SABS
470 and carry the SABS Mark of Approval.

OTHER APPLICATIONS

Other Pole Specifications

Security and Monitoring

In the world of today, Rocla’s concrete poles are playing
an important role in the particularly strong market
growth sectors of security surveillance and intelligent
transportation systems (ITS).

Rocla Spun poles are ideally suited to provide perma-

nent, low maintenance, vandal proof structures to affix
CCTV cameras or monitoring equipment. Rocla poles do
not require any stays to prevent movement unlike steel
poles.

The pole design allows for the cables to be fed from the
ground through the pole, which is hollow, so that tamper-
ing or theft of cables is significantly reduced.

We have supplied numerous poles along major routes in

Gauteng as well as large security companies who have
chosen Rocla poles for the right reasons.

Stadium Lighting
Particularly international sport is increasingly a significant
revenue earner for our country, important for our image
abroad and is playing a major role in building a sense of
pride and belonging among all our people. Whether at
the international facility level or at local recreational level,
sports grounds need to be suitable for years of maxi-
mum utilisation. Rocla’s spun concrete poles provide a
versatile, aesthetically pleasing, maintenance-free and
vandalism-free, solution for floodlighting poles that are
an investment in the decades ahead.

Park and Public Lighting

For people to enjoy the benefits of parks and public
areas to the full, the security aspects have to be
addressed and be environmentally compatible. Area
lighting has an important role to play. Rocla concrete
poles will generally be less expensive to install than their
steel and fibre glass equivalents, while giving additional
benefits of durability, zero maintenance and attractive
appearance.

TELECOM POLES

The recent rapid coverage of the country’s main urban

areas and connecting roads with tall microwave cellular
telephone masts had been handled with appropriate con-
cern for the environment. Rocla was able to satisfy the
need for an environmentally friendly structure with their
elegant spun concrete pole. Rocla’s product is also more
cost effective than traditional alternatives, while offering a
maintenance-free, longer lifespan.

The standard design Rocla concrete pole, catering

for a pre-determined load and standardised fittings, is
extremely cost effective. Whatever telecom cables are
involved, whether lightweight or heavy multicore copper,
Rocla’s engineering department can create appropriately
optimised designs to suit the need.

TRANSPORTING, HANDLING AND STACKING

Handling
Care must be taken when handling, transporting and
storing concrete poles to avoid overstressing them or
causing surface damage. Lack of care can be costly.
Damage can be caused by dropping poles, knocking
them together or subjecting them to point loads.

When unloading poles by crane on site, a single point lift

may be used. Please contact your nearest Rocla office
to establish the correct position of the lift points for the
particular poles. To avoid point loads or abrasion damage
at the lift point, a protective timber “corset” about 0.5m
long should be used. If no suitable timber is available,
use a thick wrapping or canvas or jute bagging under the
lifting chain. Alternatively use a fabric sling.

When the pole is to be lifted for insertion into the ground,

a one point lift must be used. The lift point must be ¹/³
of the pole length from the top of the pole. Guard against
localised damage at the lift point by taking the precau-
tions given above.

For two point lift, the lifting positions should be ¼ of the

pole length from each of the pole.

Stacking
Poles should be stored on a hard, level piece of ground.
The poles should be placed ¼ of the pole length from
each end of the concrete pole together with centre
support.

When stacking several layers high, position timber bear-

ers between each layer vertically above the bearers
below. For stable, safer stacking of tapered poles,
alternate the tips and butts of each layer. Do not stack
more than eight layers high.

It is good, safe practice to have separate stacks for each

length, diameter and type of pole.

INSTALLATION

Planting Poles
All Rocla poles carry a mark which indicates 1,5m above
the design ground level in order to gauge the correct
planting depth.

Pole holes should be dug so that the access slope into

the hole be parallel to the feeder line. The width of the
hole should be as narrow as possible, while allowing the
pole to be planted to the correct depth.

A practical way of planting large poles is

as follows:
Use a concrete manhole as a sleeve. This sleeve could
be planted and backfilled as described below. This
method limits the craneage cost on site. The poles could
be chocked into position and the annulus between
sleeve and pole could be filled with a sand/cement mix
afterwards.

www.rocla.co.za
15
INSTALLATION

Compacting Soil After Planting Poles

After a pole has been planted to the required depth,
dampen the soil that is to be used to fill in the hole. If the
soil is squeezed in the hand and holds its shape when
the hand is open, it indicates the right moisture content
to ensure good soil compaction.

It is important to note that there is no point backfilling the

hole completely and then trying to compact the soil. The
effects of compaction only penetrate about 300mm of
soil. Therefore backfill the hole 300mm layers at a time.
Compact each layer with a mechanical compacter or
with a hand stomper of a least 25kg in weight. Drop the
compactor 400mm per blow and apply 30 blows to each
layer of soil around the pole.

If you encounter difficult soils the

procedure must be modified:
• A loose soil that does not compact when wet must be
thoroughly mixed with three pockets of cement for each
m3 of material. The above compaction procedure can
then be carried out 300mm layers at a time. Note that
the pole will need at least two days before any tension
can be applied.

• A very clayey, wet soil must be replaced altogether by

an imported soil. The imported material should
preferably be a well grade silty soil. This should be
mixed with cement, as previous described, moistened
and used as backfill according to the previous
compaction procedure.

In the case of tall poles, such as low voltage 7m concrete

poles, in a wet clayey area, extra stabilising will be
needed. It is recommended that four concrete lintels
(1.0m long x 100mm x100mm) are used as baulks. Two
concrete lintels must be placed, one on top of the other,
at the bottom of the hole. They must be placed against
the pole on the opposite side to the intended service
take off. The soil behind the lintels must be very well
compacted as described above for clayey soils.
At 400mm from the surface, the other two lintels must be
positioned, one on top of the other against the pole,
on the same side as the intended service connections.
Finally the soil behind these two lintels must be
thoroughly compacted. If the hole is water logged, the
water must be removed before backfilling with a cement
stabilised appropriate soil.
