1.0 SCOPE

This method statement is applicable for the PWHT of the following two spherical tanks
for ARVAND PETROCHEMICAL CO.

2.0 Reference Documents

The following documents have been used as a source of the preparation of this document:
ASME Sec.VIII Div.1
WPS & PQR

3.0 Preparation for Post Weld Heat Treatment

3.1 Installation of temporary furnace

1) The temporary furnace using spherical tank body and use insulation outside is
installed for PWHT of the spherical tanks surface.
2) To prevent deformation of the tank shell must be checked roller fixed between
upper and lower base plates shall be cleaned and lubricated.

3.2 Preparation of thermocouple and temperature recorder

All thermocouples and temperature recorders shall be calibrated, and the valid calibration
certificates of them shall be submitted to QC inspector prior to commencing PWHT, and
shall be attached to the PWHT inspection report.

3.3 Confirmation of PWHT preparation:

1) All groove welded butt joints shall be radiography accepted.
2) prior to PWHT , all the external and internal attachments such as pad plates
of stairway, pipe support, etc.attached directly to the tank body shall be
welded completely, and they shall be free from undercut to avoid the
additional repair weld which might be required after PWHT.
3) Gasket contact surface of flanges shall be protected against oxidation
during the heat treatment using a suitable protective coating such as high
temperature lubricant, etc

4) The vent holes on reinforcing plates shall be opened.

4.0 Temperature measurement and recording

1) Thermocouples to measure the temperature of the heat-treated spherical tanks are

located as shown on Fig.1, thermocouple arrangement plan, and are attached
directly to the tank body. The distance of thermocouple shall not exceed 4.6 m
from each other.
2) After the thermocouples are attached to the tank body, the exposed areas are
covered with ceramic fiber.
3) Thermocouples shall have a metallic contact with weld and the tip of
thermocouples shall be insulated.
4) Insulation method of thermocouples shall be made as the following manner:
To be cleaned/brushed with metallic wire brush so that there should not be any
form of corrosion or rust on the surface of weld where thermocouple is to be
welded.
Thermocouple attached by using thermocouple attachment unit on weld joint and
push thermocouple wire insulation as it was and slide insulation on the tip of the
thermocouple wire.
5) All thermocouples shall be connected to temperature recorder instrument through
a calibrated compensating cable. The certificate of calibration shall be submitted
to verifying by inspector.
6) The temperature recorder shall be calibrated before use and certificate submitted
to verifying by inspector.
5.0 Insulation Work
1) Scaffolding shall be made of steel. This will be a separate structure from the
vessel and shall not rest on or touch the vessel. Adequate distance between
scaffolding and vessel shall be adjusted because the insulation case shall be
fixed to vessel, and it will expand during the firing.
2) Proper thermal insulation with one layer shall be provided to cover tank
completely to prevent thermal radiation and to keep uniformed heating
temperature uniform. The thickness of insulation shall be specified.

3) Attention shall be paid to insulating of nozzle parts and column stub attached
parts where insulation thickness will be much higher and securely tied to avoid
any loosening and separating during heating.
4) There shall be no gaps in the insulation prior to heating, the gaps shall be
checked and plugged by packing with loose insulation material during heating.
5) Adequate protection shall be made from rain and wind, however if during the
course of heat treatment, the insulation becomes saturated with rain water, the
PWHT operation shall be immediately suspended.
6) The temporary furnace shall be covered completely with fiber ceramic blankets,
or stone wool or equivalent.

6.0 Heating systems and equipments

3) High velocity burner shall be used. This will be manually controlled throughout
the firing with constant reference being made to the temperature recordings
instruments. (See Fig.2)
2) The tanks shall be heated by internal firing with external insulation cladding
(See Fig.3)
3) The vessel will be heated internally by an appropriate means and with adequate
indicting and recording temperature devices

4) The type of burner is short flame. The hot gases of combustion are exhausted at a
very high velocity, which promotes a high degree of turbulence giving good heat
transfer to the tank and uniformity to temperature distribution.

5) The exhaust opening should be installed in the upper crown segments of the
temporary furnace (spherical tanks).

6) Stationary or mobile gasoline tank (or LPG tank) with enough capacity
should be employed to supply the fuel to the burners, and shall be placed at a safe
distance of at least 3 meters from the temporary furnace being heat treated.

7) Regulation the gasoline flow to the burner is controlled by the pressure switches
and hand operated flow adjustment valves.

8) The burner is ignited by electric spark. If there is any pressure drop in the gasoline
and/or air line beyond a set value, the burner will be shut down completely.

9) A centrifugal fan supplies the combustion air to the burner. The air supply to the
burner is manually adjusted by a graduated butter fly valve.

10) The heat up period and heating rate of the tank is controlled by manual adjustment of
the flame intensity. During the holding period, temperature controller maintains a
constant temperature profiles by alternation between low and high firing rate. The
cooling rate is controlled by manual adjustment of the firing. As an alternative to
above mentioned controlling operation, temperature programmer will be used to
control the heat treatment cycle.

7.0 PWHT Cycle

4) The rate of heating and cooling may be less than that above to ensure that the
constraint on temperature differentials is met and that all thermocouples achieve
temperature within relatively tight band on approaching the soak- temperature.
