1.0 SCOPE
This method statement is applicable for the PWHT of the following two spherical tanks
for ARVAND PETROCHEMICAL CO.
The following documents have been used as a source of the preparation of this document:
ASME Sec.VIII Div.1
WPS & PQR
3) Attention shall be paid to insulating of nozzle parts and column stub attached
parts where insulation thickness will be much higher and securely tied to avoid
any loosening and separating during heating.
4) There shall be no gaps in the insulation prior to heating, the gaps shall be
checked and plugged by packing with loose insulation material during heating.
5) Adequate protection shall be made from rain and wind, however if during the
course of heat treatment, the insulation becomes saturated with rain water, the
PWHT operation shall be immediately suspended.
6) The temporary furnace shall be covered completely with fiber ceramic blankets,
or stone wool or equivalent.
3) High velocity burner shall be used. This will be manually controlled throughout
the firing with constant reference being made to the temperature recordings
instruments. (See Fig.2)
2) The tanks shall be heated by internal firing with external insulation cladding
(See Fig.3)
3) The vessel will be heated internally by an appropriate means and with adequate
indicting and recording temperature devices
4) The type of burner is short flame. The hot gases of combustion are exhausted at a
very high velocity, which promotes a high degree of turbulence giving good heat
transfer to the tank and uniformity to temperature distribution.
5) The exhaust opening should be installed in the upper crown segments of the
temporary furnace (spherical tanks).
6) Stationary or mobile gasoline tank (or LPG tank) with enough capacity
should be employed to supply the fuel to the burners, and shall be placed at a safe
distance of at least 3 meters from the temporary furnace being heat treated.
7) Regulation the gasoline flow to the burner is controlled by the pressure switches
and hand operated flow adjustment valves.

MSA EC CO.
8) The burner is ignited by electric spark. If there is any pressure drop in the gasoline
and/or air line beyond a set value, the burner will be shut down completely.
9) A centrifugal fan supplies the combustion air to the burner. The air supply to the
burner is manually adjusted by a graduated butter fly valve.
10) The heat up period and heating rate of the tank is controlled by manual adjustment of
the flame intensity. During the holding period, temperature controller maintains a
constant temperature profiles by alternation between low and high firing rate. The
cooling rate is controlled by manual adjustment of the firing. As an alternative to
above mentioned controlling operation, temperature programmer will be used to
control the heat treatment cycle.
Temp(c)
HOLDING
600~640 C
MINIMUM
75 min.
427 C
3) During holding period, there shall not be a greater difference than 83 c between the
highest and lowest temperatures throughout the portion of the vessel being heated.
4) The rate of heating and cooling may be less than that above to ensure that the
constraint on temperature differentials is met and that all thermocouples achieve
temperature within relatively tight band on approaching the soak- temperature.

After completion of heat treatment operation, the tank allowed cooling and the insulation
is removed. Immediately on completion of PWHT chart/records shall be submitted to
inspector for their review and approve.
PWHT chart to indicate following:

Hardness to be measured and recorded for each joints.
