Syllabus for MST 2 is as under :

Two Degree of Freedom Systems: Principal modes of vibrations, natural frequencies,


amplitude ratio, undamped free, damped free, forced harmonic vibration, semi-definite
systems, Lagrange’ equation, combined rectilinear & angular modes. Vibration
absorber principle; Torsional vibration absorber, Centrifugal pendulum vibration
absorber, Torsional vibration damper, untuned dry friction and viscous vibration
damper.
Multi-Degree Of Freedom Systems:

Exact Analysis: Undamped free vibrations, Influence Coefficients, Natural frequencies


and mode shapes (Eigen values and Eigen vectors), orthogonal properties of normal
modes.

Approximate Analysis: Rayleigh, Dunkerley, Stodola, Holzer and Matrix Iteration


methods as applied to multi degree of freedom systems.
Vibration Of Continuous Systems: Wave equation, transverse vibration of strings,
longitudinal vibration of bars, lateral vibrations of beam.

2. Read theory of continuous vibratory systems, two degree and multi degree freedom
systems and definition of various terms like normal mode, principal mode,
generalized co-ordinates etc.

3. For the system shown in the figure. find the natural frequencies and its mode shapes
(Given m1 = m2)

4. For the system shown in the figure. find the natural frequencies and its mode shapes
(Given m0 = m and k1 = k2). Assume that the rope passing over the cylinder does not
slip.

5. Explain the working of Houdaille Damper with neat sketch

6. Explain the working of Lanchester damper with neat sketch

7. Derive the equation of motion of multi DoF systems with Lagrange’s equation.

8. Shown in the figure is a transverse system of three masses attached to a tight string
having tension P. If the three masses are m1=m2=m3=m and distances between masses
l1=l2=l3=l4 = l. then find the three natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes.
9. Calculate the natural frequencies and mode shapes for following 2 DoF and Multi
DoF systems. Take
