8.2 Communication while giving
personal care
For a UK nurse helping a patient with personal care such as washing, elimination and
eating can be a main part of their daily duties. In your previous workplace many of
these activities might have been the responsibility of a patient’s relatives. In addition in
U.K. hospitals there is a growing elderly population. Although nursing places emphasis
on maintaining or restoring the independence of the elderly person you are likely to
have many elderly patients who need your help.

Even if your physical skills in helping someone with their personal care are excellent it
may take some time and effort to become competent in communicating with the patient
whilst you are working. Doing and talking at the same time can be difficult! As well as
being good for building a friendly relationship effective communication is an important
part of establishing the patient’s consent to your actions.

As an international nurse you are developing your communication and clinical skills at
speed in an intensive environment. Helping with personal care gives you the perfect
opportunity to do both.

8.2.a
Arrange to observe another nurse carrying out some aspect of personal care.
(If this is not possible, recall a patient that you have recently cared for.)
Remember you should get the consent of the patient before starting the
observation. Note down the language you hear used by the nurse and the replies
given by the patient. List the sort of phrases you hear the other nurses use. If you
have a Brilliant buddy you can share your experiences of personal care and
build up your vocabulary.

As you wash someone or groom someone’s hair it is usual to chat. This can be
therapeutically useful as you can find out how your patient is psychologically
responding to their treatment. However, even if your patient is very tired and may not
feel like responding, words that reassure or encourage can still be used.

Notice that while you are offering help and encouraging the patient to do as much for
themselves as possible (to foster independence) you are constantly checking with the
patient that they are happy - and therefore you are gaining consent.

Respect your patient’s privacy and dignity at all times by offering choices and by
assuring privacy, such as checking that they are not overlooked during a wash.

Listening is an important part of communication.

It is helpful to the team to make a note of or pass on to senior staff any relevant
information that your patient tells you while you are with them. You and your team
may need to decide whether action needs to be taken to resolve any issues that your
patient had on their mind.
