Answer POET aN)
Yes, because this keeps evaporation and pool hall ventilation costs lower. On the other hand, four out of five
public pools have the air temperature a little lower than the water temperature, mainly because this is more
comfortable for staff and some bathers. The energy cost implications are shown by the following figures for
an average public 25 metre 6-lane pool: Assuming there is an ESG desiccant dehumidifier operating with
water at 29.5°C, when the air temperature is lowered from 30°C to 29°C, the annual ventilation cost will
increase from £14,000 to £15,200. After allowing for a fabric heating cost saving of around £150, there will
be anet increase of approximately £1,000 p.a. or 7%

More importantly, supply air should be directed
over the surface of the pool to ensure efficient
removal of evaporation and by-products of pool
water dosing, which are heavier than air.

Spending more to save more and spending more to get longer life has enormous financial gain. First,
because the total cost of incorporating energy conservation in a pool ventilation system is about the same as.
one year's energy cost. Second, an ESG LTHW desiccant system will last more than 25 years and have very
low maintenance costs. The very low ESG life cost is confirmed by the 2006 Carbon Trust Report on Pool

ions, 10 litres per second per m? of wetted area
The purpose of pool hall ventilation is to remove evaporation efficiently and maintain uniform conditions.
This requires efficient air distribution as well as a given ventilation rate. Evaporation takes place not just
from the pool, butalso from wet surrounds, bodies and water features. Itis, for the most part, proportional to
the excess of the vapour pressure of the wetted surfaces over the vapour pressure of the air adjacent. This
excess increases very rapidly with higher water and lower humidity and air temperatures. 10 litres per
second per m? of wetted area is only the beginning of an accurate assessment of pool ventilation requirement.
