Live-Feedback while Ungrading

Ungrading
 In this process, work is graded as it traditionally has been, then, through revision and
iteration, is gradually improved and ultimately curated.
 Grade–>Iterate–>Replace
 An assignment of “lesser performance” will be replaced by a revised and improved work
sample that will receive a simple “Pass/Fail”.
 Grades simply jump-start the revision process, but the final product receives no letter or
number grade.
Live Feedback

 Students are given verbal and written feedback immediately after completing an
assignment.
 Live feedback is necessary when children are expected to revise and “improve” their
work.

I have decided to combine these two alternatives but have concluded that this

format best suits younger grade levels since I chose to give a final “Pass/Fail”

grade. I would not recommend using this combination alone after second grade. I

believe using these strategies will give every child room to grow with every

assignment. I think this sort of grading can be used for multiple assignments such

as worksheets, writing prompts, projects, and labs.

How to give Live Feedback while implementing “Ungrading”
1. Assign task to student.

2. When the student believes he/she is done, grade the assignment as you

would regularly in front of the child.

3. While grading the paper, give student feedback as to how their work could

be improved or simply commend them for doing an outstanding job.

4. If the number score is not a perfect 100, give the assignment back to the

child and have them work on the things discussed through live feedback.

 This step may take multiple days since they are revising any work that

was incorrect or can be improved.

5. If the number score is a perfect 100, student can move on to next task now

that they know why their work was accepted the way it was.

 If you decide that you do not want to give a number score during the

second step, you can have child simply improve their work based on

any given feedback.

6. After allotted time, collect final work.

7. Give feedback one last time, and if you find it necessary give one last

number grade, letter grade, or Pass/Fail.

 I have chosen to go with the Pass/Fail option, when grading students

below third grade.
