Introduction to the Training

This 4 module certificate course in Integral Sound Healing offers the opportunity of a thorough
introduction, exposure, immersion and training in the vast subject of Music and Medicine and can
benefit the lay-person’s personal growth journey, deepen the practice of yoga aspirants, as well as
enhance the professional work of therapists, educators, health and social workers and wellness
specialists and offer a gradual entry into the world and practice of sound healing.

The international presenters have decades of study, experience, work and production in the field of
Sound and Healing and bring together their expertise for this pioneering training opportunity in India.

Aurelio C. Hammer
Aurelio C. Hammer is the Founder and the Creative Director of SVARAM
Musical Instruments, an organologist, ceremonial musician and sound
therapist. He has done more than 25 years of research and studies in ethno-
musicology, acoustics and harmonic studies, listening traditions, music
pedagogy and healing arts. The Austrian born Sound Explorer has become a
noted pioneer in the development of innovative musical instruments and
created the holistic modality „A Sound Approach to Life“.
Combining the gifts of a musician, artist, socio-cultural activist and
visionary, Aurelio has an in-depth understanding of the underlying physics
of sound. Deeply listening, his life-long search and sound journey for the
secret of our existence led him through many countries and cultures before
he settled in Auroville, South India, where he practices the path of the Integral Yoga, a more
wholesome, energetic and creative way of life.

Joshua Leeds
Joshua Leeds is a sound researcher, educator, composer, and music producer.
He specializes in the field of psychoacoustics—the study of the effect of
music and sound on the human nervous system, and bioacoustics—how
human sound affects other living beings. Current fields of interest include
the use of music and sound for health, learning, and productivity, and the
study of sound/music from a cross-species perspective. Joshua teaches the
therapeutic applications of music and sound to musicians, healthcare, and
education professionals.
Since 2003, Joshua has directed BioAcoustic Research, Inc., dedicated to
clinically-researched auditory solutions for canine/feline behavioral issues. Since 2008, he’s served on
the faculty at “The Sound and Music Institute” at New York Open Center (NYC). As an international
presenter, Joshua’s seminars focus on the impact of Resonance, Tempo, and Pattern Identification as
common threads in sound and music therapies.He is the author of “The Power of Sound” (2010, 2001)
and “Sonic Alchemy” (1997). His 50+ recordings are used in homes, clinics, and classrooms
worldwide. Joshua resides in Ashland, Oregon, USA.

“In an integrative, cognitive, contemplative, creative and playful work we will explore the realm of
sound, self and community, understand its scientific base, psychological parameters
and the instrumentations of Sound Healing as a practice and profession towards a transforming
harmonization of the being, society and environment.”

Joshua Leeds:

I. Introduction to Tone, Tempo, and Pattern


• Introduce physiology of hearing and psychology of listening.
• Learn the basic principles of resonance, entrainment, and pattern identification.
• Apply Tone, Tempo and Pattern to application-specific music and sound.

II. Core Principals of Alfred Tomatis


• Explore Tomatis core principles.
• Learn inter-relationship of auditory tonal processing and auditory sequential processing.
• Review why sound is important in neuro-developmental issues.

III. The Building Blocks of Therapeutic Sound
• Explore drone, repetition, rhythm, harmony, melody, instrumental colors, form, intent, etc.
• Discuss synthesis and harmonics.
• Understand differences of live performance and recorded auditory experiences.

IV. Overview of Soundwork


• Explore relationship of Music therapy/Sound therapy.
• Explain the International Standards for Therapeutic Musicians.
• Describe the geography of the Soundwork field.

Rhythm : Playing Tone, Tempo & Pattern


• Isolate High/Low frequencies in the body (Play tone; play silence)
• Feel tempo differences in the body.
• Experience the effect of complex vs simple sound.
• Explore difference between live and recorded therapeutic music.

Singing : Voice Practices and Energetics


• Basic warm ups
• Unison, Polyphonic
• The joy of singing

Tuning
• Art of Listening
• Toning, harmonic singing
• Modal and intuitive singing
• Sacred and original chants

Outcome:
Modul 1 serves as a powerful entry and introduction into the vast subject of Therapeutic Music and
Sound Healing. The participants of the full certificate program will acquire a reliable foundation for
professional work in the field of Sound Healing.
The training offers an innovative, multi-cultural and integral approach to awakening one's musicality.
Through its overall layout of subjects, studies, practices and experiential learning students gain an
understanding of how sound, rhythm, voice and music can affect one's state of consciousness, promote
relaxation and assist in the process of healing.
The participants of the full certificate program will have started direct experimentation and work on
self and others, in binary and group settings, documenting queries and progress, preparing a focused
project. They will learn how to apply sound and music for personal growth, and will be able to apply a
chosen sound healing modality into their life.
Module 2, 3 and 4 are a continuation of Module 1 and are going more into depth in each area covered
in Module 1. Personal musical creativity and therapeutic practices will be explored and special
attention is given to each trainees needs and their individual focus.
Students who sucessfully complete all requirements are awarded with a Certificate of Completion.

Module 1 Accomodation in Adishakti
How to reach Adishakti
You can reach Adishakti from Chennai (the nearest airport and main train station) by road. It is a three
hour journey by bus and a two and a half hour journey by taxi. From Bangalore there are direct buses to
Pondicherry which take approximately seven hours.
The Adishakti Campus is 8 kilometers from Pondicherry and is 100meters off the Chennai-
Tindivanam-Pondicherry highway/ the Bangalore-Tindivanam- Pondicherry highway.
Should participants need to be picked up from Chennai we could engage taxis which would meet them
and bring them directly to Adishakti. A taxi charge for such a pick up is approximately Rs.2700/-
