Formulation Guide for Effective Sun

Care Preparations
Consumers are aware of the health consequences of over-exposure to the sun’s harmful rays. Incidence of skin
diseases and signs of photo-aging continue to increase globally. Therefore consumers require highly effective sun
care products that protect their skin while imparting elegant aesthetics.
Erythema, commonly known as “sunburn”, can occur when unprotected skin is exposed to sunlight. This inflam-
mation of the skin is caused primarily by UV-B radiation (280-320 nm), which penetrates the stratum corneum and
epidermis. The long-term effect of exposure to UV-B radiation is skin cancer.
UV-A radiation (320 – 400nm) penetrates much deeper into the skin. Tanning,
attributed to melanin produc-
tion, is a result of short-
term exposure to UV-A.
Melanin is produced
to protect the skin
from further dam-
age.

2
Photo-aging is an effect of long-term exposure to UV-A. UV-A exposure results in damage to the connective tis-
sues, elastin and collagen, which maintain the integrity and elasticity of the skin. In addition, UV-A suppresses the
skin’s immune system, which makes the skin more susceptible to various skin diseases, including skin cancer.
Today’s sun care products must offer protection against UV-B and UV-A radiation. In addition, they must retain
their efficacy after swimming or water-sports. Formulating effective and elegant sun protection preparations that
encourage regular use promotes healthier, youthful-looking skin.
ISP is a recognized supplier of innovative and effective sun care raw materials.
Our film forming and water resistance optimizing agents include Allianz™ OPT and Ganex® copolymers. In addi-
tion, ISP offers a broad selection of sunscreen actives, known under the trademark Escalol®.
But we offer much more than film formers, water resistance agents and sunscreen actives. ISP offers products
for all of your formulation needs. Our broad product line encompasses preservatives such as LiquaPar® Optima
which is compatible with Avobenzone, RapiThix™ thickeners, silicones (Si-Tec™), emollients (Ceraphyl® and X-Tend™)
and emulsifiers (Cerasynt® and Emulsynt®), to name a few.
We also supply novel formulation ingredients that impart elegance and distinction for all skin care preparations.
Lamellar gel systems (ProLipid®) are innovative skin-like lipid technologies used to promote healthy skin and
enhance product stability. ProLipid® lamellar gels optimize the SPF of sun care formulations by structuring the oil
and water phases of the emulsion to ensure uniform delivery of sunscreen active ingredients. The lamellar gels
provided by ProLipid® also mask the negative sensory aspects of sun care formulations sometime attributed to high
oil phase content by dispersing the oil phase uniformly throughout the lamellar gel.
Lubrajel® is a unique line of clear, water-soluble gels that function as emollinets, moisturizers and thickeners. They
improve the aesthetics of sun care formulations by enhancing their spreadability and reducing drag during product
application.
International Specialty Products is dedicated to providing innovative raw materials, outstanding technical service
and prototype formulations to our customers. Our prototype sun care formulations are typically evaluated in-vivo to
determine SPF. The formulations in this manual have completed stability testing and preservative efficacy tests to
ensure product integrity.
The ISP FORMULATION GUIDE For Effective Sun Care Preparations is designed to briefly introduce you to ISP
products for sun care and to provide novel prototype sun care formulations utilizing ISP products.
