THE STORY OF MARTHAFONS CAPE

Hello my teacher and friend. My name is Valerio Huwae from class VIII.9 – SMPN 9 AMBON. Thank
you for the chance given to me to deliver my story telling. I will tell you about “THE STORY OF
MARTHAFONS CAPE”.

Long time ago, in a small village named Poka there lived a a lttle happy family, The father’s name
was Bram who was the head of the village and sometime paddled a boat carried passanger from
Poka to Galala. The mother’s name was Mina. She was a pretty and very diligent woman that she
worked hard to help her husband by baked sago for sale. They had a very beautiful daughter. Her
name was Martha. She was 16 years old. She had a black skin and long curly hair.

Every afternoon, after Mrs Mina bake sago, Martha walked to sell it to the people around the Poka
village. She always wears a pink Cele dress, hair bun and she put sago on her tray and put it
overhead. She also sell sago in front of the Portugese Army hostel. That place is now the ferry
port.

One day, when Martha passed the Portuguese army’s hostel someone shouted “sago… sago…
come here”… Martha was afraid because she had to enter the hostel. At the same time she was
surprised that in front of her there was a very handsome man. He held out his hand towards
Martha, “I am Alfonso… I am commander of Portuguese Army… and You?” “I’m Martha”. Alfonso
said “Martha you are so beautiful”. Martha realized the situation and said “sir, do you call me to bu
sago, don’t you? If you don’t buy, I will go now”. Alfonso said “I will buy it all”. After Alfonso paid for
sago, Martha run quickly went home.

A few days later, Martha sold sago passed the hostel again. In her surprised, she found Alfonso
stood in front of her. Martha wanted to run but Alfonso hold her tray. Then, Alfonso take Martha
into the hostel. Martha was really scared but Alfonso said, “don’t be scare Martha. I will pay all
sago that you sell. Then, Alfonso asked Martha to become his friend and Martha agreed.

A year passed, Martha was 17 years old. She and Alfonso was in a sweet relationship. They loved
each other. They had secretly engage, but Martha’s parents didn’t agree with their love. But,
Alfonso still have brave came to Martha’s house. Alfonso asked Martha to marry him. But, Mr
Bram, Alfonso’s father said that he must wait until Martha 19 years old.

One day, there was news from Batavia. The entire soldiers have to go back to Batavia. Their battle
ship was anchored at the port. Martha and Alfonso must be separated. Martha was really sad and
she could not stop cry. Alfonso said, “wait for me darling. I’ll be back to pick you up as my wife”
but, Martha still cry. One by one soldier left into the ship. And it’s turn to Alfonso. He look back and
said :”wait for me, I’ll be back again”. Martha was still crying and when the ship left she took out
an handkerchief and wave it while shouting “Alfonso… Alfonso….Alfonso”. She could not stand and
suddenly jumped into the sea. Alfonso saw her and then he jumped too. They were drowned.

Mr Bram and Mrs Mina heard the news. They run to the sea shore hope for their daughter come
back. But it is useless. People tried to looked for them by boat. But they found nothing. The two
lovers lost in the sea. The place where they drown known as “Marthafons Cape” or “Tanjung
Marthafons”. Which come from Martha and Alfons.
