Guidelines for instrumentation, power aud controt cables for fixed and mol

Novembert9961, Introduction
These Guidelines have been developed in response to the offshore industry's desire to
standardize cable types for instrumentation, telecommunications and elecivical power
and control. It may be wed as a self-standing document by offshore Operators, rie
owners, design contractors and equipment builders. Altematively, it may form the basis
of user standards in part or whole.
Tn 1987, a cable standardization working group was drawn from representatives of
UKOOA, .the British Rig Owners Association (BROA) and the Intemational
Association of Drilling Contractors (North Sea Chapter) (ADC). The remit was to
define a small, logical series of cables which would mect the needs of modern
instrumentation equipment and installation practice, whilst boing efficient to
manufacture. Historically, users were found to have in-house standards with little in
common, even varying widely from one installation or. projeét to another. Many
thousands of different cable gore and make-up combinations resulted, not considering
the further complications of gheath materials and colour variants, A further UKOOA
working group has agreed standards for high and low voltage power cables which have
been incorporated into the enlarged second revision of this Guidance.
Strict adherence by users to these Guidelines will enable cable manufacturers and
stockists to concentrate on providing acceptable cables ‘off the shelf to service the
offshore industry.
Cable types have been categorized into four basic combinations according to materials
of construction, based on their fire performance. It is recognized that development of
improved insulation materials should not be restricted by standards. Although certain
materials are suggested, equivalent or superior materials may be agteed between
Purchaser and Supplicr.
Instrumentation may be installed on vibrating machinery, periodically dismounted for
calibration and maintenance, whilst miniaturization increasingly, results in restricted
termination space. Consequently, for the smaller cored cables (up to 1.5mm?) the use of
flcxible stranded conductors to BS 6360 Class 5 has been selected throughout. This is
an important departure from historic practice and has also been recognized in
BS 6883:1991.
‘With weight and cost saving a consideration, reductions in core size of instrumentation
cables were agreed. Standardized construction arrangements for screens and lay-up of
cores were evolved in association with representatives of the British Cable Makers!
Confederation, these now being shown in BS 6883:1991 as preferred types, ‘To ease
manufacture and further reduce size, quads have replaced to 2-pair cables.
Whilst every effort has been taken to ensure the accuracy of these Guidelines, UKOOA
cannot accept responsibility for any errors or omissions. Duty holders and designers
should ensure that in selecting and using the standards set out in these Guidelines that
they are suitable for their intended service.

ed2. Scope
These Guidelines cover the requirements for the design, manufacture, inspection and |
testing of elastomeric instrumentation, power and contro! cables “for offshore
installations. It is not intended to define how or where cable types should be applied |
and itis the responsibility of users to cnsure that cables are fit for purpose.
These Guidelines are complomentary to BS 6883:1991 which covers the general and
detailed construction of elastomeric cables. A sub-sot of the innumerable option
combinations is defined to enable standardization on a coherent family of cables which
will satisfy the majority of instrumentation, power, telecommunications and control
applications.
‘Although not covered by BS 6883, these Guidelines incorporate information on data
cable for use in computer networks and data highways such as Ethernet.

Guidelines for instrumentation, power and control cables for fixed and mobile
ele i UKOOA& Cable Construction & Selection
81 General
B.LL Sample specification sheets are provided in Annex C to assist manufacturers,
stockists and users to select cables for various applications. The insulation,
bedding and sheathing materials may be substituted by other equivalent
compounds which comply with the specifications. The sheets detail only the
general construction of cables: manufacturing methods may dictate the addition
or omission of proof or PETP tapes, for example.
8.1.2 Four basic fire performance types are subdivided by voltage rating into cable
specification sheets for the following typical applications:
(a) intrinsically safe (18) instrumentation
(b) non-IS instrumentation
(6) LV power and control
@ HV power
(e) other special applications
High voltage cables are only listed as standard types in flame retardant, reduced
halogen construction. Other variants are not covered by this guidance, being
regarded as non-preferred, reflecting the greatest usage pattern.
8.1.3 Apart from the sheath and bedding colour being blue rather than grey, IS cable
types ‘are identical to their non-IS counterparts. Some’ users may elect to
standardize on grey sheath cables alone. Note that the large core, unscreened
multicore (UKOOA Type ©) cables are not normally applicable to 1S circuits
and hence no blue sheath variants are recommended.
82 — Cableselection
8.2.1 Cable make-up combinations should be strictly limited to those shown in Avanex
A, Tables 1-5.
8.2.2 _It-will be noted that cables such as 2-pair screened ate not inchided as standard
types. Reference to Annex A, Table 7 suggests use of 1-quad, this being more
compact and easier to manufacture. Where individual screening is essential, 3~
paif cable may be selected.
8.2.3. For general instrumentation applications, overall screened, paired cables
(UKOOA Type P) provide adequate noise rejection for use in most switch
circuits and analogue loops. i
8.2.4 For high frequency, very small signal and other special applications, individually
screened (UKOOA Type PS, TS, QS) cables should be considered.
8.2.5 It is suggested that unscreened multicores (UKOOA ‘Type C) only be applied to
instrumentation service where their high current or voltage grade is a
requirement. Such applications would typically include switchgear control
circuits and high power, non-IS instrumentation.
8.2.6 A range of single core, unarmoured cables is intended for use as carthing cables
(UKOOA Type E), battery Ieads and other heavy duty applications not requiring
mechanical protection (UKOOA ‘Type B). Core sizes below 6 mm’ are not
covered by this guidance and it is recommended that the preferred series of core
sizes be adopted for standard use (see tables in Annexes A & B, unshaded items)

83.4 Where cables may present a smoke or fume hazard under fire conditions, Fire
performance codes G, K, W and Y may be specified to replace codes F, J, L and
X respectively. Some users may elect to use these types for all applications.
Some LSF materials possess lower tear strength than their reduced halogen
counterparts, e.g: CSP, It is expected, however, that with developing materials
technology, that performance of LSF materials will meet or exceed that of CSP.
Cables with sheathing compounds possessing the properties of both BS 7655
Section 2.6 types SW2 and SW4 may be dual marked with both UKOOA Cable
Codes with which they comply.
Ba Termination methods
8.4.1 Flexibly stranded cores (ie: those less than 2,5mm*) which are to be terminated
at clamp type terminations should be crimped using bootlade ferrules matched to
the core size. These have the advantage of being secoudarily mechanically
compressed by tightening the terminal screw or gate;’ the cores are thus
intcinsically secure. The resulting installation is generally more compact.
8.42 Bootlace ferrules with colour-coded insulated wire enties are preferred and
provide:
(a) improved guidance for the core strands on assembly
(b) visual recognition of correct cross-sectional area ferrule to match core
size
(0) support for the insulation and retention of numbering sleeves
(@) additional protection ftom electric shock and shorting
8.4.3 All crimped terminations shall be made off using adequately maintained,
manufacturer's recommended tooling, compatible with the size of core.

D CORE SIZES AND LAY-UP
UKOOA CABLE TYPE TABLES FOR STANDARD!
CONFIGURATIONS:
AL UKOOA Cable Types are designated by the number of cores, pairs, triples or quads
followed by one or two letters. The letter codes are as follows:
C —— Unscreened cored cable P Paircable
B Battery cable (single core only) T Triple cable
E __Earthing cable (single core only) Q Quad cable
S Individual soreening of pair, triple or quad (added as suffix to P, Tor Q)
eg: Type 7PS is an individually screened 7 pair, whereas type 7P has a callective
screen. Single pair cables are treated as individually screened (Type IPS).
Triples and quads are always individually screened and designated TS and QS.
A2 Only cable core lay-up and size combinations shown in the following tables shall be
used.
A3 Shaded areas without Code number entries signify non-available combinations, NOT
covered by these Guidelines. Light shaded areas denote non-preferred types.
A Codes in Tables.1 - 6 relate to the Cable Coding system defined in Annex B. Permitted
combination options of Ist & 2nd characters (chown as ** in the Tables below) are
given in Sectibns 4.5 and A.6.
A.5 — Istand 2nd character combinations permitted in Cable Codes are:

A LY cable types except battery and earthing cables (Type 1B and 1E) may be
manufactured in flame retardant (Ist character J’, K, L or W) or fire resistant (Ist
character F, G, X or Y) variants, The 2nd character in Cable Codes defines cable
internal construction per Annex B. Note that for fire resistant power cables detailed in
Table 1b, a reduced range is preferred.
A.7— Gland sizes shown in Tables 2 - 5 are proferred but may be varied smaller, subject to
agreement between Supplier and Purchaser, according to materials of construction.
