THE PRIDE OF THE MALAY RACE

Jose Rizal, the Philippines most regarded national hero is often called the “Pride of the Malay Race” or
“The Great Malayan Man.”

This gave the rise to political concept known as Maphilindo, a proposed confederation that would
consist of Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Maphilindo was initially proposed as a realization of Filipino National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal dream of
uniting the Malay people, seen as artificially divided by colonial frontiers.

RIZAL’S CHILDHOOD

Born on June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Laguna

Proud son of Francisco Mercado and Teodora Alonzo

Learned the alphabet and proved his prowess in reading and writing at the age 3.

AN EARLY PROPHECY OF A GREAT MAN

Colonization period proved to be a daunting challenge for a great boy because of the size of his head but
yet his maestro’s prophecy proved to be a life challenging event for this young boy. His maestro’s
prophecy of having a brighter future due to an oversized head proved to be a daunting task for this great
young Rizal.

CHILDHOOD ACHIEVEMENTS

At a very young age, Rizal started to engage in poetry and was able to make poem called “Sa Aking Mga
Kabata.” Rizal had a very high rate in his academic performance.

THE EYE DOCTOR

Rizal was studying to get his assessor’s and land surveyor degree. He was also studying in preparatory
course in law. When Rizal knew that his mother going blind, he was supported by Paciano to travel to
Madrid, Spain in May 1882. He studied medicine in Universidad Central de Madrid and earned the
degree “Licentiate in Medicine” and become an ophthalmologist. He was able to cure his mother’s eye.

In February 1895, Rizal met Josephine Bracken was common-law wife.

HERO OF THE FILIPINOS

Rizal is the only man who fought the Spaniards through writing. In that way, he was able to encourage
and open the eye of the Filipinos to fight the colonization of Spain in the country. He died proudly
Filipino on December 30, 1896 and wrote his poem “Mi Ultimo Adios.”
