ADVERBS OF TIME 5.
Outdoors – outside of a building
Adverbs of time tell you when something happened.
They express a point in time.
These adverbs of time are often used:
to talk about the past: yesterday, the day before,
ago, last week/month/year
to talk about the present: still, yet, while, when
to talk about the future: soon, then, next
week/month/year, in 2 days, tomorrow, the day after
tomorrow
Study the following examples:
John went to the cinema yesterday. He had to
work the day before. Last week he was on vacation.
When Julia talks to her boyfriend, she is really
happy. This month, however, she hasn't seen
him yet.
The family will go on vacation soon. Next
month they will go to Italy. Then they will go to
Spain.
Adverbs of time can also tell you how
long something lasted or lasts. They express a
period of time.
These adverbs of time are often used:
 since, for, one year, two days, three weeks,
four months, ….
Look at the examples:
She hasn't seen him since 1999.
Tom has stayed in England for one year.
Note: You use since in combination of a specific point
of time, for example a year or a date. You use for in
combination with the length of a time period.
ADVERBS OF PLACE
Adverbs of place tell us where something happens.

1. above – in a higher place; overhead; into or
from heaven; upstairs
ex.: The sun shines in the sky above our
heads.
2. off – in a direction far away from the speaker
or object
ex.: He drove off in a cloud of smoke.
3. inside – within or towards the interior of
something.
ex.: Inside the shell you will find the nut.
4. outside – on or towards the outside
Ex.: It’s freezing outside!
ex.: He likes to do sports outdoors.
6. Indoors – in or into a building
Ex.: She stays indoors most of the day.
7. Out – away from the inside or the center
Ex.: Let’s eat out tonight!
8. In – located/coming indoors or inside
Ex.: He is in the room.
9. Here – in, on or at this place
Ex.: Here I am!
10. Near – having a small intervening distance
with regard to something.
Ex.: I can’t see him, but I can hear him – he
must be very near.
11. Far – distant in space, time or degree
Ex.: my house is quite far from the beach.
12. Upstairs – on a higher floor or level
Ex.: I’ll take my shoes and put them away the
next time I go upstairs.
13. Downstairs – living, stepping or coming down
the stairs
Ex.: When the doorbell rang, the girl run
downstairs.
14. Down – from a higher position to a lower one;
downwards
Ex.: the cat jumped down the table.
15. Up – higher in area
Ex.: I looked up and saw the airplane
overhead.
16. Towards – in the direction of something
Ex.: He ran towards the door hastily.
17. Forward – towards the front
Ex.: Children have to learn to walk
backwards, but first they learn to walk
forward.
18. Backwards – in the opposite direction of
usual
Ex.: The clock did not work because the
battery was inserted backwards.
19. Below – in or to a lower place; beneath

20. There – in a place or location
Ex.: He did not stop there, but continued his
speech.
21. Somewhere – in or into an uncertain or
unspecified location
Ex.: He plans to go somewhere warm for his
vacation.
