GENERAL DESCRIPTION

1.1 System description

The ID. (S = single phase output; T = three phase
output) is connected between the user's
equipment (the load) and two different inputs:
• The DC input (to supply the inverter).
• The AC input (to supply the load in
emergency conditions).
The inverter supplies clean continuous power
and guarantees the voltage and frequency will
be stabilized at the nominal value,
independently from the mains status. Thanks to
the conversion DC/AC, it makes the load
completely immune from micro-interruptions
due to excessive mains variation, and prevents
damage to the critical load .
The static switches SSI and SB transfers the load
between the inverter and bypass mains and
vice versa, without break.
The manual bypass supplies the load directly
from the mains in case of maintenance or of
serious failure.
WARNING
The line connected downstream the ID. is
energized even during mains failure, therefore
in compliance with the prescriptions of EN
50091-1, the installer must identify the line or the
plugs supplied by the ID. making the user aware
of this fact.
Optionally the ID. Inverter system can be
configured to work in economy mode (ECO). In
this configuration the load is normally fed by the
bypass mains and only in case of failure of
bypass mains the inverter takes over the load
with no interruption of supply voltage.
The advantage of ECO mode is an improved
system efficiency of approx. 98%. This goes hand
in hand with reduced load protection against
voltage and frequency variations coming from
the mains.

1.4 Functional description

1.4.1 Inverter
The inverter converts DC voltage, supplied by
the rectifier or the batteries, into AC voltage,
stabilized in frequency and amplitude, suited to
feed the most sophisticated loads.
The alternate voltage on inverter output is
generated with a PWM system at high switching
frequency (approx. 8kHz) and it uses IGBT
transistors as power semiconductors.
The control electronics are completely digital
and use a 16 Bit µP, that, thanks to its processing
capability, generates an excellent output sine
wave, which has a very low distortion, even in
presence of high crest factor output current.
The distortion of output voltage (THD < 3% for
linear load) is minimized thanks to a filter circuit
consisting of the transformer series inductance
and filter capacitors.
The control logic of the inverter limits the
maximum output current to 200% of rated
current. In case of overload (up to 200% of rated
current) output voltage is kept constant for the
time allowed by the thermal capacity of the
inverter (thermal image function). Exceeding
the limits of the thermal image causes the load
change-over to the static bypass. The IGBT's are
protected against short circuits by means of
their de-saturation monitoring (electronic fuse).

1.4.2 Static Switch

It switches the load between the inverter and
the bypass mains and vice versa, without break
and utilizes thyristors as power commutation
elements.
Under normal operating conditions of the ID.
system, switch SSI is closed, connecting the load
to the inverter output and switch SB remains
open.
Under overload or inverter fault conditions SSI is
open whereas SB is closed and the load is fed
by the bypass mains.
M653005 E - A page 8  STATRON 2004
IDS / IDT Manual

The interruption-free supply of loads is achieved

by always enabling both static switches
simultaneously for a short time. This fact is
essential to satisfy all the requirements from
sensitive loads, for a safe and reliable supply.
In the case of closing the maintenance bypass
by mistake, to prevent the parallel connection
between the bypass and the inverter, Q40 is
electronically interconnected with the static
switch of the inverter (SSI). Thus, during the
switching of Q40, the static switch on the by-
pass (SB) will be closed and the static switch of
the inverter (SSI) will be opened automatically.

1.4.2.1 Conditions for inverter-static bypass

changeover
Voltage and frequency on emergency line must
be within tolerance:
• Under overload conditions (Alarm A14
present).
• Under inverter fault conditions (Alarm A4,
A5, A12, A13, or A24 present).

1.4.2.2 Conditions for static bypass- inverter

changeover
The ID. system returns to is normal operating
status automatically (inverter feeding the load)
provided that voltage and frequency on
inverter output are within tolerance limits and
the inverter is synchronized with the emergency
line (Status S5 present).
After three failed attempts to switch the load to
inverter within one minute, the load remains fed
by the emergency line and the ID. system
signals "RETR BLOCKED" (Alarm A17 present).
By resetting the ID. via SPECIAL Menu on the
front panel, the ID. enables a new changeover
of the load to the inverter automatically.

IDS / IDT Manual

1.4.3 Manual Bypass

The manual bypass function is to feed the load
from mains directly in case of fault or
maintenance on the ID. system. The manual
bypass basically consists of either a 3-position
rotary load switch (Q40) or three independent
switches SBCB, MBCB and OCB.
In position AUTO (Q40) the ID. is in normal
operation (contacts SBCB and OCB closed,
MBCB open). In position TEST (Q40) the load is
feed by the mains, the ID. can be tested
functionally (contact MBCB and SBCB closed,
OCB open).
In position BYPASS (Q40) the load is feed by the
mains and the supply to the static bypass is
disconnected (contact MBCB closed, OCB and
SBCB open).
With systems of ID. type, the changeover from
any other operating status to manual bypass
operating status is carried out with no
interruption of load supply.

1.4.4 Front panel (man machine interface)

The front panel of the ID., consisting of a 2 lines
alphanumeric displays plus 5 function keys, a
mimic display with indication LED’s and
separate Alarm panel with customer defined
status and alarm indications, allows the
complete monitoring of the ID. status.
The mimic flow helps to comprehend the
operating status of the ID..

1.4.5 ID. distribution

The ID. AC distribution is built into the ID.
cabinets and allows for connection of the ID.
consumers to the secured power supply of the
ID.. Please refer to schematic drawings for
details about the built-in AC distribution.

2 MAINTENANCE & TROUBLE SHOOTING

2.1 Maintenance
ID. inverters are purely static systems (except
fans), therefore they require very few
maintenance.
The frequency of maintenance mainly depends
on ambient conditions such as dust, aggressive
gases, heat and humidity.

2.1.1 Periodic checks

As a preventive measure it is recommended to
make a yearly visual inspection for systems
working under normal conditions and two
inspections for systems under bad
environmental conditions.
The visual inspection includes the following:
• Visually check wiring, terminals and all
elements for unusual signs such as burned
cables, leaking capacitors and so on. If
much dust is present clean the ventilating
grids. in the front door and in the roof. If
cleaning inside the cabinet is necessary
this should be done only with the system
switched off or on manual bypass (see
section 3.1.3). It is recommended to
ensure proper filtering of the air which
enters the ID. room.
• Measure and note all input/output
voltages of the inverter with a multi-meter
and also note the respective voltages
and the load current from the front panel.
• Measure and note the room temperature.
• Make a simple functional check
according to section 3.1.
It is recommended to note all periodic
measuring and checks in a record book.

 STATRON 2004 page 11 M653005 E - A

IDS / IDT Manual

2.1.2 Technical inspection

A technical inspection is recommended to be
made every 4 to 5 years. For this inspection the
inverter has to be switched off. The load can be
supplied by the maintenance bypass.
The technical inspection covers the following
points:
• Checking of the wiring and tightening of
all screws.
• Replacement of the fans.
• Checking the capacitors for leaking.
NOTE
Electrolytic capacitors should be replaced after
about 10 years of operation. As the storage time
of this capacitors is limited to 3-5 years, it is not
recommended to have them on stock.
• Checking and adjustment of the
electronic circuits (to be done by well
trained personnel only).
• Replacement of the semiconductor fuses.
NOTE
In accordance with the recommendations of
the fuse manufacturers, the fuses for critical
consumers should be replaced every 4 to 5
years as a preventive maintenance measure.
• Functional check: Proceed as per section
3.1.

2.2 Trouble shooting (Malfunctions)

Operational disturbances often have quite
simple causes; the following selection of
disturbances and remedies will be limited to
such cases.
For correcting faults having less obvious causes,
a thorough knowledge of the specific inverter
electronics is required.
Therefore, if it is found impossible to correct the
fault on the basis of the recommendations given
here, then the nearest service representative
must be consulted.
M653005 E - A page 12  STATRON 2004
IDS / IDT Manual

When any operational disturbance occurs,

make sure that all the prevailing conditions,
such as blown fuses, LED alarms, etc., are noted
before anything is done to the inverter. Never
clear the event history of the inverter in case of
a failure!
IMPORTANT
If any parts of the inverter must be replaced, first
switch the ID. to maintenance bypass as per
section 3.1.3. Furthermore it is advisable to have
the schematic and parts list at hand during
trouble shooting.
The trouble shooting procedures mentioned
hereunder result from fault descriptions shown
on the text display on the front panel. Starting
from a particular alarm, the technician is given
possible problem causes to check and correct.
If it is not possible to locate the failure the
supplier of the ID. has to be contacted
immediately. For an efficient help it is very
important to have the correct reference of the
equipment in trouble, therefore the serial
number or order number shown on the rating
plate is always needed.
The alphanumeric display offers a complete
diagnostic of the system by showing 25 alarms
and 6 operating status descriptions.
Each alarm is associated to a code that allows it
to be stored in the events history.

3.4 Remote connections

3.4.1 Remote panel

The remote operating panel is used for the
remote monitoring of the ID. for distance up to
400m; it can be installed in a control room, and
provides the same user interface as the local
panel.

3.4.1.1 Hardware configuration

The connection is carried out with remote
operating panel and serial interface RS485. The
remote panel must be supplied directly by the
mains (220Vac 50Hz).
IMPORTANT
Please make sure that 220Vac 50Hz power is
available in the remote panel installation room.

3.4.1.2 Connection cable

The remote operating panel is connected to the
ID. by a shielded cable 4 x 0,5mm, of 400m
maximum length and two DB9 connectors.
The connection cable must be built in the
following way:

IDS / IDT Manual

3.4.2 Modem
The standard ID. can be controlled through a
normal telephone line by means of a remote
operator connected through a PC with modem
device, who performs a phone call to the
number connected to the ID.. Therefore, the
operator can make use of all pieces of
information delivered by the ID. through its
RS232 serial interface.

3.4.2.1 Hardware configuration

In order to perform this function a PC with ID.-
control software (optional) and an external or
internal modem device connected to the
telephone line are needed.
The modem, connected to the UMI interface
(ID.-Modem Interface), will be installed ID. side.
The modem will be programmed in auto-
answer mode; it will provide, later on a call, to
connect the ID. to the telephone line.

3.4.2.2 Functioning principle

The remote operator, by means of a PC and a
modem device, and using the remote
connection function of the control software,
calls the ID. using the number to which this is
connected.
The modem device, connected to the ID., will
answer the call and convert the data coming
from the ID. serial interface on the telephone
line. All measures and controls provided by the
RS232 serial interface can be accessed.

3.4.2.3 Modem programming procedure

We will call Smart Modem (SM) the one
connected to the PC and Dumb Modem (DM)
the one connected to the ID.. The following
programming is suitable for modem devices
using a standard Hayes AT language.

3.4.2.4 Connection cables

The connection of the SM device to the PC is
carried out through a standard modem cable
(which is a standard accessory of the modem
itself) when using an external modem, but it is
not necessary when using an internal one.
The connection cable between the DM and the
ID. must be made in the following way:

3.4.3 Relay alarm card

The ARC card is used to repeat to a remote
location some ID. status and alarms, by means
of SPDT (Single-Pole-Double-Throw) voltage free
contacts. The contacts are rated 250V AC / 4A.
One or more ARC cards can be used in a ID.
system.

Figure 10 - ARC board layout

The configuration of the ARC card(s) and the

connection terminals for the individual signals
can be seen from the schematic drawings.

4 COMMISSIONING
Before the inverter is switched on for the first
time after installation, the following checks of
the power connections and control electronics
must be carried out carefully.

4.1 Connections
IMPORTANT
This check must be made before any AC or DC
voltage is applied to the inverter!
Based on the terminal list (see schematics
drawings), carefully check that the connections
on the mains side and on the load side are
correct and make sure that each connection,
wire or cable is tightly connected.
The check for correct polarity of the connections
is particularly important.
Check all elements for transportation damages
and loose screws or cables.

4.2 Switching ON the inverter for the first time

CONDITION
The inverter is considered to be completely
voltage free and MCB's, switches and fuses in
the following position:
• Switch Q1(ICB) in position „OFF“
• All control fuses inserted.
• External AC feeder to bypass open
• Q40 in position "AUTO" (SBCB + OCB
closed, MBCB open)
• SW1 (“NORMAL-BY-PASS” switch) in
position NORMAL.
• All load MCB’s in AC distribution open
• External DC feeder MCB’s in the battery
chargers open
(1) Switch on DC feeder in the battery charger
