ANNUAL EXAMINATION
CLASS : VII RECAP –ENGLISH- ANSWER KEY DURATION : 3 HOURS
SUBJECT: ENGLISH MAX MARKS : 80
SECTION A- READING [20 Marks ]

I. Read the following passage carefully. [8 Marks]

1. Filled with just jam or layered with spicy meat, cheese and vegetables, sandwiches are one of the most
popular quick-meal options today. A sandwich is any food that consists of two slices of bread with a filling in
between. This dish is generally eaten as a light meal.
2. This dish got its name from the historic town in south-east England called ‘Sandwich’. The first sandwich
was made in England in the mid-1700s for John Montagu, the 4 th Earl of Sandwich. Most food historians
believe that Montagu, who was addicted to gambling, spent several hours at the card table and did not
even take breaks for meals. During one of his long games, he reportedly asked his cook to prepare
something he could eat without getting up from his seat while playing. The cook is said to have prepared a
dish with meat stuffed between two slices of bread, and the sandwich was born.
3. Documents such as diary entries from this period suggest that the noble men of the kingdom began
consuming sandwiches after it was popularised by Montagu. Other gamblers and busy people began eating
sandwiches, and by the end of 1760’s, it became common. It was noted that by 1789, King George III and
his family always took a supply of sandwiches on outings. Though America is currently one of the highest
consumers of sandwiches, the dish was not popular in the region until the 1820’s. However, as the time
passed by, sandwiches were adapted to suit local preferences and were included in American cookbooks
and restaurant menus.
4. One of the most iconic events in the history of sandwiches is the invention of the bread-slicing machine
by American inventor Otto Rohwedder in the 1920’s. This machine made it possible to get uniform, thin and
neat slices of bread that can be packed and sold. By the end of the 20 th Century, sandwiches became a
global hit, with each region having its own variant.
5. The world’s largest sandwich was prepared by Wild Woody’s Chill and Grill, a restaurant in the U.S. on
March 17, 20005 which weighed 5,440Kgs. However, the honour of the world’s longest sandwich goes to
Lebanon with a sandwich over 7.5meters long in 2011. Undoubtedly sandwiches are one of the most
commonest items school children and office goers eat for lunch as they are easy to pack, quick to make
and delicious to eat!

II. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: [7 marks]
1. Ketchup maybe synonymous with tomato today, but did you know that the ketchup initially did not have
tomato in it? In fact, it wasn’t made with any vegetable. It started out as a fermented fish sauce recipe. It
took trial, error and experimentation with different ingredients plus good many years before turning into its
present, popular and almost indispensable form.
2. Although the word ‘ketchup’ is used interchangeably with ‘sauce’, strictly speaking, tomato sauce is a
stage or two away from tomato ketchup. Ketchup is a condiment. A condiment is a substance such as salt,
mustard or pickle that is used to add flavour to food. So, ketchup enhances the flavour of the food. Sauce,
on the other hand, forms the base of a recipe. Entire dishes depend on the type of sauce they are cooked
in. Ketchup is often used as a sauce, but a sauce can rarely substitute ketchup.
3. Another popular misbelief about ketchup is that it is an American invention. While food historians are
divided about its exact origins, there is enough evidence to suggest that it originated almost five centuries
ago in Asia. The word ‘ketchup’, it is believed, comes from the Chinese word ’ke-tsiap’, meaning pickled
fish sauce. Later, when it went to Malaysia and Indonesia its name changed. The Malaysians called it
‘kechap’ and the Indonesians ‘ketjap’.
4. Further, the North Americans made the most significant changes to ‘ketchup’: they brought in tomatoes
and sweetened it significantly. In 1801, a woman named Sandy Addison came up with a way to preserve it
for years: squeeze the tomatoes dry, press through a sieve, add salt and boil the concoction. Add nutmeg,
cloves, cinnamon, ginger, pepper and allspice. Boil until the mixture thickens. Cool and bottle.
5. Jonas Yerkes, an American , is known to be the first farmer to sell bottled ketchup nationally. Yerkes did
not have any competitors in the market for 40 years until the American company Heinz stepped in to the
fray. Heinz carefully monitored the process to make a ketchup with more taste and texture. They haven’t
looked back since. So the next time you dip your fries, pakoras or bergers into ketchup, think back on the
interesting journey this condiment has had!
